Mott Mac Donald is an employee‑owned, international engineering, management, and development consultancy, with a dedicated and rapidly expanding environmental division. Our environmental team supports a diverse range of clients across various sectors and regions. Our Environmental team is seeking a talented and experienced Cultural Resource Specialist to join the team. This position will be an in‑house consultant position based out of our office in Los Angeles, CA.

The successful candidate will report to Mott Mac Donald’s environmental lead in Los Angeles, CA.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting planning, design, environmental clearance, construction, and/or maintenance projects. The role includes regulatory compliance, technical studies, and consultation consistent with California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), AB 52 tribal consultation, relevant State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), National Register of Historic Places, California Register of Historical Resources (CRHR), California Historical Resource Status Codes, and local jurisdictions’ requirements for projects primarily located in Los Angeles County.
  • Providing senior technical reviews, QA/QC, and technical documentation for Secretary of the Interior’s Standards (SOIS), CEQA, NEPA, Section 106 of the NHPA, AB 52 tribal consultation, Section 4(f), as well as related requirements, where applicable.
  • Coordinating with agencies or agencies having jurisdiction, clients, or project team members and stakeholders, as applicable.
  • Conducting California Historic Resources Information System (CHRIS) inventory records searches for the APE to establish a reasonable buffer and assembling prior studies, survey coverage, site/structure records, historic maps/aerials (Sanborn, USGS), and relevant context documents (e.g., historic context statements).

We invite applications from candidates with the following experience and capabilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant archeology, paleontology, environmental science, engineering, or a related discipline; a master’s degree is a plus.
  • Minimum of ten (10+) years of experience in environmental consulting, engineering/sciences.
  • The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work independently and effectively manage multiple tasks. They should possess strong scientific background with writing skills and be familiar with environmental policies (e.g., CEQA, NEPA).
  • Experience conducting field surveys/monitoring.
  • Strong interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills (both oral and written) are essential, along with proficiency in technical documentation, and analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and interpret complex reports, diagnose issues, and develop and evaluate effective solutions is required.
