Position: RAIL EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTOR (RAIL FLEET)
Supervises and provides training in the maintenance and repair of rail vehicles and other related equipment in the area of Rail Fleet.

Written Exams are projected to be scheduled for the week of March 23, 2026. Performance exams are projected to be scheduled for the week of March 30, 2026. * Conducts classroom and individualized training on all aspects of equipment and vehicle repair, testing, and maintenance in the area of Rail Fleet

* Prepares lesson plans, course outlines, schedules, and testing performance exams

* Provides hands-on demonstration in the repair and maintenance of various components of the rail systems

* Develops detailed technical training and testing materials

* Coordinates specialized training needs with Manager, Equipment Maintenance Instruction

* Reports to various work locations to provide training and/or technical support to rail maintenance personnel

* Keeps up to date with current technology by attending factory update training sessions

* Establishes safety guidelines on maintenance procedures

* Evaluates and tests trainees

* Operates shop tools and equipment for demonstration purposes related to rail systems

* Reviews, updates, and distributes new manuals and wiring schematics

* Provides orientation to personnel on new equipment, systems, and vehicles

* Analyzes vendor training materials for accuracy and system compatibility

* Prepares reports and correspondence

* Serves as technical expert for troubleshooting maintenance problems

* Complies with California General Orders as required by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and other applicable laws and regulations

* Develops and assesses safety programs

* Provides technical expertise to other department personnel

* Supervises subordinates

* Accounts for subordinates and personal compliance with all of Metro's safety rules, polices, and procedures

May be required to perform other related job duties

A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. A typical combination includes:

Education

* Associate's Degree in Electronic or Mechanical Engineering Technology or in a related field from a recognized college or trade school

Experience

* Three years of relevant full-time experience performing electro-mechanical repairs of rail vehicles OR three years of relevant full-time experience providing engineering support in rail engineering maintenance OR two of relevant years full-time experience conducting training in the repair and maintenance of rail vehicles and equipment

Certifications/Licenses/Special Requirements

* Valid California Class C Driver License

* Must be able to obtain a California Class A Commercial Driver License in order to operate an emergency response (Hi-Rail) equipment

* Must have normal color vision

* Must be able to work on any shifts, including nights and weekends

* Exposure to electrical, mechanical, chemical, and physical hazards

* Must comply with all California Occupational Safety & Health Act (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and protective gear 'including but not limited' to respirators and/or hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required

* Positions in this job classification are considered safety-sensitive and subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing, under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations

Knowledge of (defined as a learned body of information that is required for and applied in the performance of job tasks)

* Theories, principles, and practices of repair and maintenance of rail vehicle systems, components, and related electrical systems

* Safe and proper use of tools and other equipment

* Applicable safety, environmental, local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations governing vehicle maintenance such as CPUC General Orders

* Mechanical principles

* Electrical terminology

* Development of curricula, learning objectives, and lesson plans

* Applicable business software applications

Skill in (defined as the proficient manual, verbal, or mental utilization of data, people, or things)

* Planning, organizing, and monitoring training of personnel in maintenance and repair of equipment and related systems

* Assessing training needs

* Developing lesson plans

* Analyzing situations, identifying problems, and recommending solutions

* Communicating effectively orally and in writing

* Interacting professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives

* Operating computers and computer software, and navigating a computerized maintenance management system software
