• Supervise and direct engineering staff conducting routine and special field investigations of existing bridge structures on State and local highway networks.
• Prepare comprehensive written engineering reports of findings in accordance with National Bridge Inspection Standards.
• Provide quality assurance of the bridge inspection program through review of engineers’ reports, training, and on‑site inspections.
• Respond to bridge emergencies, coordinate staff, and collaborate with Caltrans and outside units for emergency repairs.
• Offer technical assistance, planning and coordination for the Highway Maintenance‑Structures Program (HM3), State Highway Operation & Protection Plan (SHOPP), and State Transportation & Improvement Program (STIP) related to bridges.
• Act as lead expert on bridge inspection activities as directed by the Office Chief.
• Maintain valid California Civil Engineer registration and a California driver’s license.

• Valid certification of registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
• Valid California driver’s license when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.

• Extensive knowledge of design, construction, and maintenance of bridge structures on State and local highways.
• Proven experience supervising and directing staff of engineers on bridge investigations.
• Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups and make sound decisions during stressful situations and bridge emergencies.
• Knowledge of National Bridge Inspection Standards and FHWA metrics for the National Bridge Inspection Program.
