Position: Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Manager

Hermeus is a high-speed aircraft manufacturer focused on the rapid design, build, and test of high-Mach and hypersonic aircraft for the national interest. Working directly with the Department of Defense, Hermeus delivers capabilities that will ensure that our nation, and our allies, maintain an asymmetric advantage over any and all potential adversaries.

We are seeking a knowledgeable, proactive, and hands‑on Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Manager to lead all aspects of EHS compliance, culture, and risk management across two Southern California aerospace facilities. Based in Los Angeles, this position oversees both the Hawthorne and El Segundo sites, supporting complex operations in engineering, manufacturing, and R&D environments.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience in high-reliability sectors (aerospace, defense, advanced manufacturing), along with deep expertise in California‑specific environmental and occupational health regulations. This role is responsible for designing and implementing scalable EHS systems that support business growth, regulatory compliance, and workforce safety.

Responsibilities
  • Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management
  • Develop, implement, and maintain site‑specific EHS programs aligned with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, including:
    Cal/OSHA (Title
    8), Cal/EPA, DTSC (Title 22), CUPA, SCAQMD, RCRA, EPCRA, and NPDES requirements.
  • Prepare and manage all regulatory submissions and documentation, including:
    Air quality permits, Hazardous Waste Manifests, Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP), Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) plans, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and TRI reports.
  • Interface with local regulators during inspections, audits, and permitting processes; ensure timely resolution of findings or corrective actions.
  • Program Development & Facility Oversight
  • Act as the lead EHS representative across both Hawthorne and El Segundo facilities, ensuring consistent implementation of standards.
  • Conduct regular site audits, hazard assessments, job safety analyses (JSAs), and walkthroughs to identify and address safety risks.
  • Collaborate with facilities and engineering teams on the safe design of new construction, equipment installation, and layout changes.
  • Maintain and test Emergency Response Plans (ERPs), including evacuation routes, chemical spill protocols, and annual drills.
  • Monitor and report key safety performance metrics such as: TRIR, DART, near‑miss rates, and CAPA closure timelines.
  • Training, Engagement & Safety Culture
  • Design and deliver recurring training programs tailored to employee roles and regulatory needs, including:
    Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Haz Com, PPE, confined space, machine guarding, respiratory protection, and heat illness prevention.
  • Lead monthly Safety Committee meetings and serve as a visible, accessible resource for safety‑related concerns at all levels.
  • Maintain OSHA‑required records (300, 300A, 301) and ensure timely and accurate injury/illness reporting.
  • Drive a strong safety culture through employee engagement, coaching, and on‑the‑floor presence.
  • Incident Response & Continuous Improvement
  • Lead investigations of all incidents, near misses, and environmental releases using structured root cause analysis methods.
  • Implement and track corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) to closure, ensuring long‑term risk mitigation.
  • Conduct trend analysis to identify systemic issues and recommend engineering or administrative controls.
  • Foster continuous improvement through collaboration with operations, engineering, and leadership teams.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of EHS leadership experience in aerospace, advanced manufacturing, or similarly regulated industries.
  • Expertise in California‑specific regulations and agencies (Cal/OSHA, DTSC, SCAQMD, CUPA, SMARTS).
  • Demonstrated success building or scaling site‑level EHS programs.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to engage with regulatory agencies and deliver effective training.
