Description
Burns & McDonnell’s team in the Los Angeles region is looking for a Staff Environmental Scientist to support environmental investigation and remediation projects for clientele within a variety of business sectors, including electrical utility, solid waste, mining, manufacturing, oil and gas, renewable energy, and others. This position offers challenging work with significant project variety at a successful, growing company that has been in business for more than 125 years.
This individual will enhance our existing remediation and environmental engineering presence in the region, working closely with clients across multiple markets. The position offers the opportunity to utilize cutting-edge technology applied in the remediation industry, including 3D visualization modeling, forensic studies and investigation, high-resolution site characterization, remediation systems design, etc. This position requires experience performing environmental site assessment and remediation, remediation system design, operation, and maintenance, as well as installation and sampling of monitoring wells, report and permit preparation, task management, and other activities, as required.
Experience with emerging contaminants of concern, including PFAS, is preferred. The Staff Environmental Scientist will work within our region’s Remediation Department and collaborate broadly to support our Environmental Services Global Practice (division) national Civil Construction group, and generally perform the following duties:
- Support preparation of environmental investigation plans, reports, feasibility studies, etc.
- Perform safety, project, and task management duties on environmental projects.
- Subcontractor solicitation and contracting, scheduling, and task management of field activities involving staff and subcontractors.
- Work in the field to guide environmental site assessments, including subsurface soil and groundwater sampling, air and vapor monitoring, monitoring well installation, soil logging, etc.
- Assist in remediation system design, installation, and operation, including in-situ remedies, cover systems, recovery and treatment, etc., including work in the field.
- Work closely with project teams to complete and review projects within scope, budget, and schedule.
- Flexibly support non-remediation environmental consulting work as needed, such as stormwater compliance, air quality permitting, solid waste planning, habitat restoration, and more.
- All other duties assigned.
- Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science or related degree from an accredited program.
- Minimum of 4 years of related experience required (6 years preferred), completing environmental investigations and remedial actions, analyzing and summarizing data, preparing soil boring logs, geological cross sections, groundwater flow maps, technical report writing, etc.
- Experience on California projects, working with California regulators including DTSC and the Water Boards, is preferred.
- Demonstrated aptitude in performing environmental field monitoring activities, including collecting soil and groundwater samples, logging soil borings, installing and developing monitoring wells, conducting hydrogeologic investigations, etc.
- Experience in the field supporting remedial actions, including emergency response, excavation oversight, in-situ treatments, waste management, restoration, etc.
- Demonstrated experience analyzing data, summarizing results, technical report writing.
- OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training (and annual updates) is required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong problem-solving abilities.
- Must possess strong interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team framework.
- Previous consulting experience is a plus.
- Experience working on projects with emerging contaminants of concern including PFAS and PFOA is strongly preferred.
- Proficiency navigating regulations and working knowledge of State and/or Federal regulations in California desired.
- Ability to travel and work in the field up to 25%, as required.
