Entry‑Level Transportation Engineer/Planner (Spring/Summer 2026)
Join Fehr & Peers as an Entry‑Level Transportation Engineer/Planner for the Spring/Summer 2026 cohort. This role offers a foundation in both planning and engineering through a range of project types and tasks.
Base Pay Range$76,000.00/yr – $82,000.00/yr
Work Experience and Learning OpportunitiesOur emphasis on early development of project management and technical skills provides a strong foundation for growth. You will gain experience in:
- Transportation impact studies
- Bicycle and pedestrian planning
- Access, circulation, and parking studies
- Multimodal operations assessments
- Complete streets planning, operations, and design
- Cost estimates and project specifications
- Transit forecasting and operations
- Travel behavior forecasting
- Vehicle miles of travel assessments
- Systemic safety studies
- Highway interchange/corridor studies
- Climate action plans
- Freight planning
- Transportation demand management (TDM) plans
- Design drawings from conceptual to construction‑ready documents, including bikeways, complete streets, signing and striping, traffic signals/ITS, street lighting, roundabouts, and temporary traffic control
Throughout your tenure, you will:
- Conduct transportation analysis and write reports
- Participate in meetings, preparing presentations and public outreach materials
- Handle project management responsibilities
- Participate in professional organizations
- Conduct site visits and collect field data
- Explore Fehr & Peers internal Research and Development program
- Engage in on‑the‑job training and mentoring in the first month
- Work on multiple projects and seek additional work from project managers
- Use technical software programs and prepare deliverables such as memos, reports, and presentations within six months
- Attend client meetings and gradually take on responsibility for managing small projects by the end of the first year
- Entrepreneurial spirit and proactive communication
- Curious about transportation challenges in your community
- Completed bachelor’s degree (or in‑process master’s) in transportation, civil or electrical engineering, urban and regional planning, geography, math, statistics, economics, or a related field
- Relevant coursework in transportation, engineering, planning, or related areas (EIT for engineering candidates preferred)
- Experience or exposure to field work, traffic operations analysis, signal design, bicycle or transit planning, infrastructure finance, transportation and land use policy, or travel demand modeling
- Familiarity with software such as Microsoft Excel, GIS (ArcGIS, QGIS), CAD (AutoCAD, Microstation), traffic operations analysis tools (HCS, Synchro/Sim Traffic, Vistro, VISSIM, Sidra), travel demand modeling tools (Cube/Voyager, Trans
CAD, VISUM, Emme), and programming (Python, R) - Prior office experience related to the above topics
- Technical writing and public speaking experience
- Strong interpersonal, collaborative, and creative problem‑solving skills
- Organizational skills and ability to balance multiple tasks on defined timelines
