Director Of Nursing – Overview

El Camino College, Division:
Health Sciences & Athletics. Director Of Nursing under the direction of the Dean of Healthcare Sciences. Provide direct leadership of the Nursing Program, functional supervision over assigned positions, implementation of the program’s vision, and development, organization and implementation of goals and objectives. Maintain Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) standards and national accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).

Responsibilities
  • Provide a curriculum that meets BRN requirements; prepare reports for continued BRN approval.
  • Assist with recruitment and admission of students; oversee advanced placement and NCLEX‐RN application processes; prepare graduation summaries for employers.
  • Prepare orientation procedures for new students and for NCLEX licensing, licensure steps and transfer programs.
  • Facilitate communication among the nursing program, division office and campus areas; interpret and implement college policies and attend management meetings.
  • Resolve staff, faculty, and student problems; provide guidance, feedback and consistent follow‑up.
  • Orient, guide, assign and assist nursing department staff.
  • Serve as lead researcher and writer for accreditation reports for internal and external agencies such as BRN and ACEN.
  • Review and revise the college catalog, website and printed information pertaining to the nursing program each year.
  • Coordinate and administer the nursing program budget; support allocation of resources and provide requests for supplies, equipment, and facilities improvement.
  • Implement and coordinate grants for the Nursing Program; gather and complete grant progress reports and share statistical data.
  • Review proposed legislation affecting healthcare professions and implement changes; communicate changes in state and federal legislation to appropriate persons.
  • Represent the college as required by the division dean, vice president of academic affairs or the college president; articulate the nursing program with higher education institutions, district high schools, healthcare agencies and other community organizations.
Organization Management
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of regulations, policies and requirements for assigned programs and ensure compliance with the college’s policies.
  • Strengthen processes, programs and services through assessment, program review, planning, and resource allocation.
  • Train, supervise, motivate, and evaluate performance of assigned personnel; recommend transfers, reassignments, termination, and disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Implement plans for efficient and appropriate use and security of assigned facilities; ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Work with Information Technology personnel to enhance and improve relevant computer systems and learn emerging technologies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education:

    Master’s degree from an accredited college or university that includes coursework in nursing, nursing education, or administration.
  • Experience:

    One year of full‑time experience in an administrative position in a nursing department with direct responsibility for administrative decision‑making, budgeting, employing, delegating assignments, planning, evaluating, and allocating resources;
    Two years of teaching experience in a pre‑ or post‑licensure nursing program;
    One year of experience as a registered nurse providing direct patient care.
License and Other Requirements
  • Current registered nurse licensure in California or eligibility for reciprocity.
Desired Qualifications
  • Master’s or Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in nursing that includes coursework in nursing education or administration.
Knowledge and Expertise
  • Knowledge of ACEN and BRN standards; experience in a community college setting; plan, organize and administer the processes and operations of the college's Nursing Program, Extended Nursing, and Partnership Programs; interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures; understand and practice the principles of administration and supervision.
