Program Overview

The Head Start and Early Head Start programs serve children ages 0–5 across many cities in Los Angeles County, including Carson, Commerce, Compton, Culver City, and others. Children receive developmental, health, nutritional, and mental health services, along with healthy meals and nutrition education for parents.

Job Summary

The Co‑Teacher assists in providing a stimulating learning environment for children ages 2–3, fostering social, emotional, intellectual, and physical development and promoting social competence.

Responsibilities
  • Provide an environment that supports development across all domains and encourage parent involvement.
  • Implement the program curriculum for morning and afternoon sessions, plan individual and group activities, and coordinate with the Family Advocate.
  • Integrate Head Start services—parent involvement, social services, nutrition, health, and mental health—into classroom learning.
  • Conduct daily classroom planning, maintain student records, and submit accurate monthly paperwork on time.
  • Observe, screen, and assess developmental levels and set individual goals.
  • Support parents as primary educators and reflect culturally diverse backgrounds in the learning environment.
  • Ensure physical environment meets state and local licensing requirements and safety standards.
  • Perform any additional duties required to fulfill the program mission.
Essential Duties
  • Plan and implement curriculum for double‑session classes.
  • Conduct classroom planning and integrate Head Start services into learning.
  • Observe, screen, assess developmental levels.
  • Provide a program supporting parents as prime educators.
  • Other duties as required.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Must pass a fingerprint clearance, background check, and provide proof of TB clearance, annual influenza vaccination, pertussis and measles immunization.
  • Health screening at time of employment required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, kneel, squat, and move quickly in a busy environment.
Education
  • 6 units of infant/toddler education (minimum 3 semester units at hire, 6 units within 1 year).
  • Associate degree in Early Childhood Education/Child Development or related field with 24 units of child development.
Experience
  • Experience working with children.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate Teacher Child Development permit or higher.
  • One year of teaching experience.
  • Head Start performance standards knowledge.
  • Creative curriculum design and licensing regulations understanding.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (written and verbal).
