UCLA Extension is one of the top programs of its kind, teaching more than 35,000 students per year across approximately 4,500 classes and non‑degree certificate programs. This course targets attorneys, taxation professionals, and others working in the real estate industry who want to understand tax issues related to real estate transactions. The content builds on basic federal tax principles and covers tax consequences of sales, exchanges, and dispositions, including taxable events, basis, gain or loss, at‑risk and passive activity loss provisions, capital vs.
ordinary loss treatment, and non‑recognition provisions such as like‑kind exchanges and involuntary conversions.
Instructors teach technical tax content and use case studies and real‑life examples to help students apply concepts in the workplace. The role supports a collaborative, inclusive learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds. Instruction may be in‑person, online, or hybrid.
Instructor Duties- Develop and/or update course syllabus in consultation with the UCLA Extension Program Director using the approved syllabus template
- Prepare and deliver course materials and learning assessments in the assigned format (in‑person or hybrid)
- Use the Canvas Learning Management System for course support and delivery of online/hybrid content
- Communicate teaching objectives, learning outcomes, and grading policies to students
- Evaluate student achievement of learning outcomes and assign grades
- Post final student grades to the transcript system no later than two weeks after the last course meeting
- Respond to student questions and learning needs in a timely manner
- Stay current with the professional body of knowledge in the field of practice
- Participate in required orientations and instructor training programs
- Complete required administrative tasks, including hiring paperwork, quarterly syllabus updates, posting bio and photo on the UCLA Extension website, signing the quarterly contract, ordering required texts, and communicating AV or classroom needs
- Employ culturally competent teaching methodologies that are inclusive of domestic and international student populations
- Use subject‑matter expertise to impart knowledge and arrange additional resources such as guest speakers as appropriate
Basic qualifications:
current knowledge and teaching experience in one or more of the following areas are encouraged:
- Federal Tax Practice and Procedures
- Federal Income Taxation
- Real Estate Accounting + Finance
- Estate Planning
- Curriculum Vitae/Resume (most recently updated)
