POSITION OVERVIEW

The West Los Angeles College (WLAC) – Applied Technology Division seeks a creative faculty member with a demonstrated commitment to student success for a full‑time tenure‑track position. WLAC offers the only Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved community college program in Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) in the city of Los Angeles. The successful candidate will lead a growing Aviation Maintenance program and collaborate with other departments to build an integrated program that offers multiple academic and professional pathways.

DUTIES

AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Teach all courses in the Aviation Maintenance Technician Program (AMTP).
  • Provide training required for AMTP students in accordance with FAA operating procedures and guidelines.
  • Teach the skills and knowledge required for competency in aircraft maintenance, including use of reference materials, tools, equipment, and technology.
  • Demonstrate in‑depth knowledge of mechanic privileges, limitations, and responsibilities, and maintain a working knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations.
  • Perform instruction and academic support duties: evaluate student performance, develop and assess learning outcomes, update courses and curriculum, maintain a posted schedule of office hours, and be available for student consultation by appointment.
  • Comply with additional instructional and operational guidelines as detailed in the WLAC and Curriculum Manual, as approved by the FAA.
  • Maintain accurate records in accordance with LACCD and FAA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Participate in shared governance related to academic and professional matters within the division and the college.
  • Engage in program review and the development and revision of curriculum and student learning outcomes for the AMT program.
  • Participate in department, division, and college initiatives.
  • Attend meetings and activities sponsored by the department, professional organizations, community partnerships, and advisory boards.
  • Assist in AMTP pathway development through outreach with high schools, 4‑year universities, and industry.
  • Participate in recruitment, outreach, and development of cooperative work experience opportunities for students.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and disability backgrounds of community college students.
  • Potentially teach in high schools.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM DEGREE AND LICENSE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree AND two (2) years of professional experience; OR
  • Associate's degree AND six (6) years of professional experience.
  • A valid FAA Airframe & Powerplant Certificate (Instructors must meet the FAR 147.23 eligibility requirements).
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community college faculty, staff, and students.
  • Medical certificate indicating fitness to engage in administrative work is required for new employees at the applicant's expense prior to employment.
  • All employees must be fully vaccinated and complete a baseline test or have an approved exemption, as required by LACCD Board of Trustees Policy 2900.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree.
  • Experience teaching in an AMT program, especially within the community college system.
  • Experience with avionics technology, and Airframe and/or Powerplant topics as listed in FAR Part 147 Appendix B, C, and

    D.
  • Familiarity with Aircraft and Maintenance Professional Origination and AMT skills competition guidelines.
  • Proficiency in computer use and willingness to use advanced technology for high‑quality instruction, including online instruction and Canvas.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience using student‑centered and innovative pedagogies to teach and motivate students at all levels of college‑readiness.
  • Adaptability to varying pedagogical approaches to meet the needs of a diverse student population.
