Department Summary

The College Academic Advisor in Athletics (payroll title: Student Affairs Officer 3 Exempt) serves as the primary resource for designated teams of undergraduate student‑athletes on matters pertaining to College rules and regulations. College Academic Advising in Athletics is part of the Division of Undergraduate Education with the UCLA College.

Position Summary

The counselor will provide academic advising regarding degree requirements and academic policies as well as broader University policies and procedures. They must be aware of departmental requirements and policies, coordinate with other academic units to present scheduling conflicts and to ensure time to degree, and handle requests for special scheduling needs. Participate in programming the academic mentor program in the Office of Academic Excellence (OAE) in Athletics.

Make group presentations and represent the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics as well as College Academic Counseling in Athletics at various campus events. Assist in planning and coordinating events for OAE in Athletics. Additionally, the counselor is responsible for monitoring and implementing NCAA and Big Ten Conference certification and eligibility requirements for all assigned student‑athletes, developing and evaluating programs under the jurisdiction of the College, and building relationships with campus‑wide units and external agencies.

The position reports to the Director of Student‑Athlete Advising.

Work schedule:

9 am‑5 pm (Monday‑Friday) with necessary evenings and weekends as required. Assist the Director with special projects as needed.

Qualifications
  • Work in admissions, academic advising, athletic administration, NCAA compliance (Required)
  • Experience working with college‑age young adults (Required)
  • Ability to effectively counsel and academically advise undergraduate students with professional, academic and/or personal questions and concerns; detailed knowledge of University and College academic rules, regulations, policies and procedures (Required)
  • Skill in working independently and following through on duties with minimal direction; demonstrated problem‑solving and process improvement (Required)
  • Ability to organize and conduct group presentations on academic and NCAA policies and procedures (Required)
  • Skill in communicating with persons of diverse backgrounds; knowledge or experience with undergraduate student populations (Required)
  • Skill in setting priorities and managing multiple projects simultaneously (Required)
  • Ability to establish and promote cooperative working relationships; diplomatic interaction with other academic units (Required)
  • Skill in writing clear, concise, logical reports, correspondence and proposals (Required)
  • Skill in evaluating information and policies per criteria set by the Director of Student‑Athlete Advising and the NCAA (Preferred)
  • Working knowledge of College and University regulations, NCAA eligibility and academic reform regulations (Required)
  • Must maintain a regular schedule and be available for varying work hours, including evenings and weekends (Required)
Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training (Required)
  • Master’s Degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training (Preferred)
Special Conditions for Employment
  • Background Check:
    Continued employment is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.

  • CANRA:
