The mission of Equitas Academy Charter Schools is to prepare students for college, careers, and life pursuits, and to inspire them to be champions of equity. We currently serve over 2,000 students and operate six schools in the Pico-Union neighborhood of Los Angeles.
The Avance Residency is a one-year, robust teacher preparation program for candidates in the greater Los Angeles area. Avance disrupts systems of inequity in teacher preparation to collectively innovate, transform, and provide access and advancement for educators, especially those from our historically marginalized communities. We invest in and develop them to thrive, so that our students receive the highest quality education starting on day one.
In Avance, teacher residents learn what to teach, how to teach it, and build strong networks of support through cohort learning, mentorship, and university programs.
An Avance Resident Teacher is a nonexempt, classified staff member. Avance residents work under the supervision of a mentor teacher and support them in implementing all instructional components. While planning and implementing instructional content, residents receive coaching and mentoring from their Avance mentor teacher.
