Overview

Peer Mentors support the students of Los Angeles with skill-building support by providing peer mentorship in areas related to life-skills development, academic, and social wellness. Peer Mentors are primarily assigned to support 1-2 semester students, along with transfer, 5Z and 7AC students. However, a student from any semester can be assigned a Peer Mentor by Student Success staff as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Serves as a role model and mentors students by encouraging and modeling a successful balance of academic, social and college life.
  • Build positive relationships with members of assigned student groups through weekly check-in emails, one-on-one study sessions, hosting campus-wide events to provide necessary resources and encourage community engagement as needed.
  • Share relevant information about important academic weeks, campus events, resources, services, and policies to students through outreach initiatives as directed by Student Success staff members.
  • Facilitate intentional weekly events for students, including one educational and one social initiative, per week.
  • Promote student personal growth, academic success, participation in leadership, college-sponsored programs, student organizations, and other activities.
  • Provide student referrals to campus and community resources as appropriate.
  • Maintains an active and visible role and is available and approachable for students.
  • Other Administrative duties, as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Display an ability to serve as a positive role model and resource for AMDA students.
  • Be actively enrolled at AMDA during the Spring 2026 term.
  • Must be a 3rd - 7th-semester undergraduate or graduate student during employment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to individual learning styles.
  • Positive organizational skills & time management skills.
  • Possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA and remain in good academic standing while serving as Peer Mentor.
  • Hold an exemplary attendance and conduct record as deemed by and at the discretion of the staff of the Student Affairs department.
Time Commitment
  • Time commitment hours will fluctuate, but a Peer Mentor is expected to be available for: weekly Student Success team meetings, regular meetings with the Student Success Specialist, Peer Mentor Training, New Student Orientation & Move-In, Welcome Weeks, Graduation, and other integral departmental times.
  • Peer Mentor Training Dates:
Week 0 (February 15th and lasting until February 22nd). It is important that you are present for these training sessions in person.
  • Peer Mentors must hold a minimum of 15 office hours per month within the Student Life office completing administrative, and/or programmatic obligations.
  • This includes being present during a set portion of the academic break between semesters through the end of Week 15.
  • 4th-semester (AOS), 8th-semester (BA/BFA), and 8th-semester (MA/MFA) students are encouraged to apply, yet are asked to be mindful of their academic obligations and the time commitment the Peer Mentor role requires. It is very difficult to learn the Peer Mentor role as students are in their final semester due to academic obligations and the time commitment the role requires.
