Los Angeles Mission College (LAMC) is a two-year community college located in Sylmar, serving the educational needs of the North East San Fernando Valley and surrounding communities. The Culinary Arts Institute (CAI) at LAMC prepares students for careers in the food service industry, including culinary arts, restaurant management, and professional baking.

Description:

LAMC is looking for a highly motivated and experienced instructor to teach Culinary Arts and serve as the Culinary Arts Instructor Full Time Limited for Spring 2026.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and two years of verifiable industry experience;
    Or
  • Associate's degree and six years of verifiable industry experience;
    And
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disabled, and ethnic background of community college faculty, staff and students.

General Requirements

Health: A medical certificate indicating fitness to instruct or associate with students is required at the applicant's expense after selection from an eligible list and prior to employment.

Eligibility Requirement: COVID-19 Vaccination

Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustees' Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated or have an approved exemption. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or by the start date.

Desirable

Qualifications:

  • Experience in Front and Back of the House Hotel/Restaurant Operations, Food and Beverage Management.
  • Experience as General Manager or Executive Chef of Hotel or Restaurant Kitchen.
  • Experience in managing and leading large-scale catering events.
  • Educational background specific to the hospitality/culinary industry.
  • Experience in training or formal teaching in industry and/or higher education.
  • Serve Safe Certified and Serve Safe Proctor.
  • Proven record training food service employees (on-the-job training).
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Fundamental knowledge of the foundations of cooking.
  • Extensive knowledge and application of international cuisine and cooking.
  • Butchery skills with expertise in butchering and fabrication of primal cuts.
  • Proficiency in a la minute and batch cookery.
  • Proficiency in principles of baking and patisserie.
  • Personal characteristics necessary for successful teaching of community college students, including judgment, leadership, emotional stability, teamwork, and educational perspective.
  • Strong understanding of food service cost controls, including budgeting, inventory management, and waste reduction.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of diverse backgrounds of community college faculty, staff, and students.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

This position requires a commitment to the college of over 30 hours per week including over 21 hours of teaching. Evening, weekend, and offsite classes may be scheduled based on the department's needs.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Teach a variety of Culinary Arts courses, including catering courses, and other courses as assigned. Teaching schedule may include morning, afternoon, evening, or weekend hours, and may include online, hybrid, synchronous, or in-person modalities. Classes may be at alternate sites such as community-based sites or partnerships.
  • Maintain, review, and submit student enrollment and attendance data in a timely manner per department, college, and district guidelines.
  • Establish and convene industry advisories; promote partnerships to enhance resources and job placement for students.
  • Attend required meetings and collaborate with colleagues.
