The English Language Development (ELD) Coordinator is an integral part of the school’s instructional leadership team and leads the ELD strategy at their school site. With specialized expertise in the instruction of ELD, the coordinator ensures all Multilingual Learner (ML) scholars are supported academically and socially‑emotionally through data monitoring, ELPAC/SBA coordination, reclassification progress, and compliance with state/federal EL/ELPI requirements. They are responsible for ensuring ML scholars meet their learning outcomes.
The Coordinator creates and implements the site’s ELD program, coaches classroom teachers on effective strategies, plans staff PD on designated/integrated ELD and culturally responsive practices, and leads family engagement through workshops and literacy nights. In addition to these leadership duties, the Coordinator may also provide direct ELD instruction in the classroom.
- Develop and implement a school‑specific Multilingual Learner (ML) Program strategy, aligned with the network's ML Network Plan, to enhance instruction and achievement for ML scholars.
- Evaluate the site's Multilingual Learner program through instructional walkthroughs, classroom observations, and ongoing scholar data analysis to ensure ELD program effectiveness.
- Support ELD and content teachers through modeling, co‑teaching, push‑in support, and data‑driven feedback to improve ML instruction; teach a small number of designated ELD classes as needed.
- Observe ELD teachers and provide feedback, coaching, and support on unit/lesson planning, execution, differentiation, and data analysis.
- Plan and lead professional development for staff on integrating California ELD Standards with state‑adopted content standards (Integrated ELD).
- Maintain accurate ML documentation (e.g., ELPAC results, reclassification files, parent notifications) in compliance with district/state requirements.
- Lead annual reclassification cycles for ML students in collaboration with operations staff and counselors; progress monitor current MLs and recently reclassified students (RFEP).
- Coordinate initial and summative ELPAC administration, analyze results, and use data for ML identification, placement, and reclassification.
- Ensure ML accommodations are provided for state assessments (SBAC), college entrance exams (SAT/ACT), and classroom tests per IEP/504 plans.
- Recruit, form, and facilitate the ML Parent Advisory Committee (ELPC) to amplify family voice in school decisions.
