Teacher Aide Early Head Start South Bay – Volunteers of America Los Angeles
Volunteer of America is a non‑profit human services organization committed to serving people in need, strengthening families, and building communities. We provide a variety of services including Head Start, Upward Bound, veterans’ services, homeless shelters, low‑income housing, and drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
Pay Rate: $20.03 – $21.08 per hour

Program: Through Head Start and Early Head Start, we work with children ages 0‑5 and their families, providing health, nutrition, and developmental support. Children receive screenings, immunizations, nutrition education, and healthy meals.
Job Summary and PurposeThe Early Head Start Teacher Aide is a critical member of the team who will work daily at school sites, serving staff, children, and volunteers. The role ensures compliance with health, safety, and nutrition guidelines while supporting classroom staff.
Responsibilities- Serve meals to children, ensuring customer service is professional and courteous.
- Prepare meals and replenish food items during meal times.
- Communicate with central kitchen, site supervisor, and teaching teams regarding menu changes, allergies, and food counts.
- Monitor food allergies and alert kitchen and site staff of any concerns.
- Post and update monthly menus.
- Assist classrooms and teachers during meal times.
- Maintain sanitation and disinfecting practices, preventing cross‑contamination while washing dishes, cleaning, and storing.
- Sanitize and restock kitchen and materials, conduct inventory, and order supplies as needed.
- Provide a physical environment consistent with state and local licensing requirements and the health and safety needs of children.
- Ensure staff and parent volunteers follow CACFP rules and regulations.
- Perform additional duties as required to support the program mission.
- Serve children during mealtimes and assist teachers and classrooms.
- Communicate with central kitchen, post menus, and track food allergies.
- Maintain sanitation and disinfecting practices.
- Restock kitchen and materials.
- Ensure the environment meets state and local licensing requirements.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Pass a fingerprint background check and provide required documentation.
- TB clearance within 6 months prior to hire.
- Annual influenza vaccination between Nov 1 and Mar 31.
- Pertussis (whooping cough) and measles immunization.
- Health screening at time of employment.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., frequently kneel and squat, and move quickly.
- High school diploma or GED plus 12 early childhood education / child development units, including 3 units in infant/toddler development.
- Or enrollment in, or completion of, an apprenticeship certification program.
- 24 units in ECE or CD, including 3 units in infant/toddler developmental studies.
- Assistant Teacher Permit or higher.
- Food handler certificate.
- Certifications in public health, nutrition education, food safety, or related fields.
- Prior work experience in Head Start/Early Head Start programs.
- Promotion of nutrition curriculum, activities, and initiatives.
- Proficient in English and Spanish, or another language such as Armenian or Farsi.
