Salary Range: $167,300 - $177,200

Type: Full‑time

• Plan, organize, and direct the design activities for the School Upgrade Program and critical repair projects; serve as the lead design professional in the Design Department, providing quality review, implementing policy and procedures, and coordinating with the Division of State Architects (DSA).
• Manage and develop the District’s design process for the Facilities Planning and Development Division to ensure plans meet functional program, budgetary, environmental, and legal requirements.
• Oversee multiple projects from conception through draft, final review, approval, and handoff to project execution, interacting with architects, consultants, and District personnel.
• Ensure the building design complies with LAUSD standards and guidelines, working with design professionals and District administrators to meet educational and building standards.
• Identify and select architectural firms based on qualifications and ability to meet performance standards.
• Provide architects with clear direction regarding goals, objectives, standards, site, schedule, and budget.
• Establish an efficient design review process to ensure projects meet goals, deliver value, and are sustainable for the District, community, and environment.
• Make timely decisions and document all project steps to meet legal requirements.
• Review design changes to keep projects within budget.
• Recommend architectural firm assignments from a pre‑qualified list.
• Participate in community relations and outreach to promote understanding and acceptance of District building projects.
• Coordinate with professional staff supporting the District’s design function.
• Develop continuing education opportunities such as seminars and workshops for architects and contractors.
• Coordinate project activities with other District branches and departments, including Environmental Health and Safety, A/E Design Services, Maintenance and Operations, and others.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• 15 years of full‑time paid professional experience managing facilities design or planning and coordination of capital projects, including overall design, contract administration, cost estimating, and scheduling.
• 5 years of that experience within K‑12 educational facilities.

• Bachelor’s degree in architecture or engineering from a recognized institution.
• Master’s degree in architecture or engineering preferred.

• Valid Certificate of Registration as an Architect by the California State Architectural Board or Professional Engineer by the State Board for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
