We’re currently seeking a highly motivated Senior Design Manager located in Los Angeles, CA.

Required Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, urban planning, or a related field.
  • Master’s degree in architecture preferred.
  • Continuing education and training specific to educational facilities planning preferred.
Required Certifications/Licenses
  • Valid Certificate of Registration as an Architect by the California State Architectural Board or Professional Engineer by the State Board for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
Required Qualifications
  • Fifteen (15) years full‑time paid professional experience managing facilities design or the planning and coordination of capital projects including overall design, contract administration, cost estimating, and scheduling.
  • At least 5 years of this experience must be with the design, planning, and construction of K‑12 educational facilities.
Responsibilities
  • Develop, coordinate, and update LAUSD’s standards and guidelines, including Educational Specifications, School Design Guide, and space program templates.
  • Support leadership with prioritizing capital projects and programs using data‑driven analysis, manpower prioritization methodologies, and presentation of recommendations.
  • Meet with instructional staff, school sites, and architects to define facility attributes supporting instruction.
  • Develop standards and guidelines ensuring new and modernized facilities meet educational requirements.
  • Coordinate with Furniture and Interiors Group to develop furniture and equipment solutions to meet educational needs.
  • Conduct post‑occupancy assessments to determine necessary improvements or adjustments to District Standards.
  • Review and support development of project space programs aligning with District standard education specifications and school instructional needs.
  • Review project design deliverables and provide comments on space planning and physical adjacencies.
  • Coordinate with California Department of Education (CDE) requirements and support review and submission for CDE plan approval.
  • Plan, organize, and direct design activities for the School Upgrade Program and critical repair projects, serving as lead design professional in the Design Department.
  • Manage, develop, and coordinate the District’s design process for the Facilities Planning and Development Division to ensure plans meet functional, budgetary, environmental, and legal requirements.
  • Establish a selection process for architectural firms based on qualifications and performance standards.
  • Provide architects with clear direction regarding goals, objectives, standards, site, schedule, and budget.
  • Ensure comprehensive documentation meeting legal requirements.
  • Review design changes to maintain budget compliance.
  • Recommend architectural firm assignments from a pre‑qualified list.
  • Develop continuing education opportunities to share updated information on working with architects and contractors.
  • Coordinate project activities with other District branches and departments such as the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, A/E Design Services, Maintenance and Operations, School Occupancy Transitional Unit, Asbestos Technical Unit, and Local Districts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Salary

A bonus may be granted based on performance, utilization, attendance, tenure, and other non‑financial goals, at management’s discretion.
