Overview

Project Conservator, Textiles (Temporary, Part-Time) — Conservation Center, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).

Reporting to the Senior Conservator, Textiles, the Project Conservator, Textiles will be responsible for the conservation and restoration of textiles and costumes within the museum’s collection. This role involves planning and executing conservation projects, conducting condition assessments, and collaborating with curators and other museum staff to ensure the preservation of artworks. The Project Conservator will also contribute to research, documentation, and public outreach initiatives related to conservation.

The Project Conservator is brought in as needed, to take on available conservation projects.

Responsibilities
  • Performs condition assessments and treatment of textiles, costumes, and related works of art within the museum’s collection.
  • Maintains detailed and accurate records of conservation treatments, condition reports, photographic documentation, and any relevant research or findings. Ensures all documentation meets professional standards and museum protocols.
  • Manages conservation projects from inception to completion, ensuring that work is completed within scope, time, and budgetary constraints.
  • Prioritizes and schedules conservation tasks based on the needs of the collection and project requirements.
  • Provides consistent updates to the head of textile conservation.
  • Works collaboratively with other conservators, museum staff, and external experts to coordinate conservation efforts and address specific project needs.
  • Researches materials and techniques used in artworks within the collection. Stay updated on advancements in conservation science and methodologies.
  • Assists in the preparation of conservation-related publications, reports, and presentations.
  • Represents the museum in professional meetings and conferences.
  • Stays informed about current conservation practices, research, and emerging technologies through continuous professional development.
Benefits

The expected hourly rate for this Los Angeles, CA based position is $64.00-$65.00, subject to change.

Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Conservation, with a focus on textile conservation preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in textile conservation preferred, including hands-on treatment and project management.
  • Proficiency in conservation documentation, and techniques specific to textiles, costumes, and related works of art.
  • Familiarity with current conservation practices, ethical guidelines, and research.
  • Ability to handle and lift textiles and costumes safely, and to work in varied environmental conditions (e.g., temperature and humidity-controlled environments).
