This role focuses on developing commercial, high-volume product lines that balance creativity with clear business objectives, including target pricing, margin, and seasonal strategy. The ideal candidate combines a strong fashion point of view with a solid understanding of the tween consumer and the realities of fast-paced, calendar-driven design.
Key Responsibilities- Design and develop tween girls’ apparel across multiple product categories (e.g., tops, bottoms, dresses, sets, outerwear, active, sleepwear as needed).
- Drive seasonal concept, color, print, and graphic direction tailored specifically to the tween girl customer.
- Translate trend and market research into cohesive, commercial collections aligned with brand positioning and retailer needs.
- Create detailed technical flats, CADs, colorways, and artwork direction from initial concept through final production handoff.
- Collaborate closely with Product Development, Merchandising, and Technical Design to ensure designs meet fit, cost, and quality requirements.
- Design into specific target price points and margin goals for a range of retail channels (e.g., mass, specialty, off-price).
- Review and comment on samples, lab dips, trims, and strike-offs to ensure alignment with design intent and brand standards.
- Maintain accurate seasonal line sheets, style libraries, artwork files, and other design documentation.
- Participate in internal line reviews and external buyer presentations, clearly communicating design vision and rationale.
- Monitor selling, competitor activity, and consumer feedback to continuously refine product direction.
- 5+ years of apparel design experience, with a strong preference for tween girls or girls’ apparel.
- Clear understanding of tween girl aesthetics, age-appropriate styling, and current youth culture trends.
- Proven background designing commercial product for broader retail or branded markets.
- Demonstrated ability to handle high style counts and multiple seasonal deliveries under tight deadlines.
- Advanced skills in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop (or comparable industry-standard design software).
- Strong sense of color, print, graphics, fabric, and silhouette specific to the tween market.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
- Experience working in a private-label, multi-brand, or fast-turn environment.
- Familiarity with international sourcing and working directly with overseas factories or vendors.
- Hands-on experience with trend research, competitive shopping, and building seasonal trend decks.
- Experience creating presentation boards and sales tools for key retail partners.
- Ownership of a core product category within a high-volume tween apparel business.
- Opportunity to influence seasonal direction and product strategy for a key consumer segment.
- A collaborative environment that values creativity, speed-to-market, and commercial success.
