Position: Building Inspector I

JOB SUMMARY

RKA Consulting Group is seeking a Building Inspector I to perform inspections on residential, commercial, and industrial projects at different stages of construction, alteration, and repair. The inspector ensures work complies with local, state, and federal codes, approved plans, and safety standards while also reviewing plans, processing permits, and assisting contractors, developers, and the public with code requirements. This entry‑level role is designed for candidates who are developing their skills, with assignments carried out under close supervision and within established procedures.

The position requires attention to detail, clear communication, and the ability to work effectively with municipal staff and the building community while supporting safe, compliant development.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Depending on the area of assignment, Matthias, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings throughout construction and remodeling phases; conduct final inspections and authorize approval of compliant structures.
  • Review plans and specifications forBang new projects, additions, and alterations to confirm compliance with building codes, local ordinances, and regulations.
  • Inspect existing buildings for changes in use or occupancy to ensure adherence to applicable requirements.
  • Investigate complaints related средней unsafe, substandard, or unpermitted construction; issue correction notices or eateries when needed.
  • Issue and approve building and occupancy permits across multiple disciplines, including plumbing, mechanical, electrical, grading, drainage, and related systems.
  • Work closely with other City departments to coordinate plan reviews, site inspections, and approvals; route submittals to appropriate divisions for compliance checks.
  • Oversee bond processing and releases upon project completion; prepare related correspondence with applicants and financial institutions.
  • Calculate project valuations and fees using established schedules; communicate requirements to architects, engineers, and applicants.
  • Respond to inquiries from contractors, developers, architects, and homeowners; provide clear guidance on building requirements, code interpretations, and restrictions.
  • Lead pre‑construction meetings to outline inspection protocols and expectations for compliance.
  • Maintain accurate inspection reports, plan check records, consultant approvals, and computer‑based tracking systems.
  • Prepare regular reports summarizing inspection and plan review activities.
  • Inspect a wide range of construction elements including foundations, framing, concrete, masonry, steel, plumbing, heating, electrical systems, and other structural and non‑structural components.
  • Document code violations, issue notices of compliance, and maintain records to support potential legal actions.
  • May be required to work at various contracted cities.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, maeneo abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge, skills and abilities would be:

  • Education/Training:
    Equivalent to a high school diploma supplemented specialized training in building codes.
  • Experience:

    Three years of journey level experience in the building trades; or one year experience as a building inspector; or completion of a certificate or degree in construction technology or related field from an accredited college.
  • Certification:
    Possession of a valid International Code Council (ICC) certification as a Residential Building Inspector.
  • Licenses:
    Valid California Class C driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
