Controller, Accounting, Bookkeeper​/ Accounting Clerk

Description

Robert Half is recruiting for a strong Controller Consultant to stabilize and clean up a disparate and behind accounting environment.

This role is ideal for someone who grew up in a family‑owned business, understands entrepreneurial environments, and has touched all areas of accounting with deep strength in inventory. You'll dive into the backlog, clean up the books, and bring structure to an operation that relies heavily on manual processes, spreadsheets, and mixed systems (QB and off‑brand tools). This role will be located onsite in Commerce, CA.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead month‑end close and clear accounting backlog

- Reconcile and clean up inventory, AP, AR, and GL

- Correct costing, adjustments, shrink, and valuation

- Create or refine accounting processes and documentation

- Assess current systems and recommend improvements

- Partner with entrepreneurial leadership and operations

- Prepare books for audit review

Ideal Background

- Small business / start‑up experience

- Strong
** inventory accounting
** in wholesale, produce, distribution, retail, or manufacturing

- Proven ability to clean up messy, manual, or outdated accounting environments

- Comfortable with Quick Books, off‑brand systems, and heavy Excel

- Strong communication and soft skills for working with entrepreneur‑type personalities

- Hands‑on, adaptable, and able to operate with minimal oversight

Requirements

- Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in accounting or financial management.

- Proven expertise in inventory accounting within wholesale, distribution, retail, manufacturing, or similar industries.

- Proficiency in Quick Books, Excel, and other accounting systems, with the ability to adapt to unfamiliar tools.

- Strong ability to clean up and organize manual or outdated financial environments.

- Excellent communication skills to work effectively with entrepreneurial leadership and diverse teams.

- Hands-on approach with a proactive and adaptable mindset.

- Experience preparing books for audits and ensuring compliance with financial regulations.

- Ability to operate independently while managing multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
