Position: Security Police Officer 1

The Security Police Officer I, an armed position, is responsible for the control of entry and exit of cleared and uncleared personnel and vehicles into Security Areas. The SPO I works under general supervision to protect the Los Alamos National Laboratory's (LANL) security interests and property from theft, vandalism, illegal entry, and other acts that may adversely impact national security or the health and safety of Laboratory employees.

The SPO I assesses and processes the perimeter intrusion detection alarm system, provides armed responses and resolves security incidents and alarms, and escorts sensitive materials. Additionally, the Security Police Officer I utilizes specialized operational equipment including x‑ray machines, metal detectors, and nuclear material monitors. Decisions are made within the confines of Northern New Mexico Integrated Security, LANL, and Department of Energy regulations, directives, orders, policies and procedures.

A rigorous background investigation including criminal history check, credit check, pre‑employment drug screening, physical and psychological examinations will be conducted. Due to the armed nature of this position, applicants with convictions for domestic violence, who are the subject of a protective order or have felony convictions will not be considered.

Recruitment and Assessment Steps

Candidates are required to complete multiple recruitment and assessment steps to be considered for the Security Police Officer Position. These steps include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Successfully passing the Wunderlich Assessment, an online test of general cognitive abilities.
  • Participation in an onsite Recruitment Assessment event tentatively scheduled for January 11, 2024. An invitation with detailed instructions, along with any required forms, is emailed to eligible applicants prior to the event. This event is conducted in Los Alamos, New Mexico at an altitude of approximately 7,400 feet. Travel arrangements and costs are not organized or reimbursed by N2

    MIS and are the responsibility of the applicant. This onsite assessment includes:
  • Advanced Readiness Standards testing as outlined in 10 CFR 1046.
  • One mile run in eight (8) minutes thirty (30) seconds or less.
  • Forty-yard (40) dash in eight (8) seconds or less starting from a prone position.
  • Push‑ups and sit‑ups – maximum repetition in one minute for each.
  • A firearms simulation assessment on your basic understanding (safety and control) and manipulation of weapon systems. This is a demonstrated assessment in a virtually simulated environment.
  • A panel interview.
  • Completion of a comprehensive onsite physical and psychological exam, including a drug and alcohol screen, if a contingent job offer is extended. Date to be determined.
Responsibilities
  • Handle classified materials as prescribed by Department of Energy and Los Alamos National Laboratory policy and procedures.
  • Identify and manage items that would be considered prohibited and/or controlled at a government facility.
  • Operate special monitoring and searching equipment.
  • Apply Limited Arrest Authority, exhibit a proper level of force, and execute command and control to stabilize situations.
  • Apply individual and team tactics while responding to security incidents.
Qualifications
  • US Citizenship required.
  • Position is onsite (not remote).
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • 18 years of age to participate in the assessment events. Must be 19 years of age by actual hire date.
  • Currently have, or be able to obtain and maintain, a DOE Q level security clearance. Obtaining this clearance requires US citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances.
  • Currently have, or be able to obtain and maintain, certification in the Human Reliability Program (HRP).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid, unrestricted New Mexico driver’s license.
  • Ability to successfully complete Department of Energy (DOE) Basic Security Police Officer Course or TRF 100 and site‑specific training programs including weapon certifications.
  • Must be capable of meeting and maintaining the approved standards as outlined in DOE O 473.21 and 10 CFR 1046.
  • Military, security or law enforcement experience considered a plus.
