What You Will Do

The Information Sciences and Modeling Group (A‑1) develops information systems and models to understand complicated threat scenarios, like weapons of mass destruction, hurricanes, and infectious disease outbreaks. The work we do at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) matters to our country and the world.
We are seeking a year‑round post‑baccalaureate student with a degree in a STEM field to join our group. This student will partner with experienced mentors who will provide guidance and feedback throughout the course of the 1‑2 year internship.
What You NeedMinimum
Job Requirements:
- Educational background in Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or related field.
- Communication:
Good communication skills, brainstorming and writing skills are essential, as is working effectively as part of a team. - Programming
Experience:
Proficiency with Python, R, Java, MATLAB, or an equivalent programming language. - Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Desire to continually learn new things, as well as be open to working on a variety of topics.
Education Requirement:
Must have been awarded a bachelor's degree in a STEM field within the past three years but not yet accepted and enrolled in a graduate program. Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or its equivalent, on the last bachelor's degree earned.
- Experience with large‑scale data processing
- Experience with high‑performance computing and parallel computation
- Experience with mathematical and/or statistical modeling
- Experience with agent‑based modeling
- Experience with machine learning
- Experience with natural language processing
- Clearance:
Eligibility for a Q clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, is desired but not required.

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
