Research Scientist
What You Will Do
The T-1 group is seeking qualified candidates to hire as undergraduate Students to work within our research teams. This is an educational opportunity for the selected candidates to contribute to cutting‑edge scientific research and to learn new skills and areas. Selected students must have and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 on their undergraduate work. Typical summer internship is 10‑12 weeks.
Selected candidates will be paired with a mentoring team and will work closely with one of the scientific teams within T‑1.
T‑Division provides a unique and engaging environment that fosters multi‑disciplinary collaborations to support the laboratory's strategic basic research and national security missions.
The Physics and Chemistry of Materials group (T‑1) seeks to understand how basic forces operating at the atomic level manifest themselves in the properties of matter at the macroscopic level. The group maintains theory, modeling and simulation capabilities in a broad set of materials‑related areas. Current activities in the group include research in atoms, molecules, solids, liquids, gases, and plasmas. Our goal is to provide innovative and creative solutions needed to solve technical problems across the Laboratory's missions, including energy security, stockpile stewardship, and global threat reduction.

Job Requirements
- Enrollment in a Bachelor's Degree program in Physics, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or closely related field
- A minimum 3.0 out of 4.0 GPA
- Familiarity with the usage of scientific software packages and how to perform analytical calculations
- Ability to work within a collaborative team environment
- Desire to learn new things and openness to work on different projects
- Familiarity with scientific research methods and data demonstrated by completed coursework in the natural sciences;
- Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context.
Education / Experience: Current enrollment in a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics, engineering, physics, or a related field.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
