What You Will Do
The Quantum and Condensed Matter Physics Group is seeking qualified candidates to hire as post‑master students to work within our research teams. This is an educational opportunity for the selected candidates to contribute to cutting‑edge scientific research and to learn new skills and areas.
The Quantum and Condensed Matter Physics Group (T‑4) in the Theoretical Division conducts both basic and applied theoretical research in a wide range of areas, including quantum matter, strongly correlated systems, quantum information science, quantum computing, quantum photonics, materials physics, nonequilibrium dynamics, statistical physics, applied energy, and atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) physics including opacity. This research supports the missions of the U.S. Department of Energy.
You will work on a research project with a staff scientist mentor and co‑mentor in one of the aforementioned areas. The position is expected to begin typically in the summer, but it can begin anytime during the year.
What You Need MinimumJob Requirements
- Master degree from an accredited program in physics, chemistry, quantum science, materials science, or related fields, completed within the past 3 years.
- Must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
- Knowledge of condensed matter physics, quantum physics, or AMO physics.
- Experience with conducting scientific research.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context.
The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

New‑Employment Drug TestThe Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new‑employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre‑offer.
