What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Environmental Technician 2 or Environmental Technician 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Environmental Technician 2Environmental Technician 2 ($53,700 - $82,500)
Do you enjoy working outdoors and have an interest in learning more about the environment, Laboratory operations, and environmental monitoring? The Environmental Stewardship Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking an Environmental Technician to work on the Resources Management team conducting Soil, Foodstuffs, and Biota monitoring. The selected candidate will support the following projects:
- Collect, process, and submit environmental monitoring samples such as soil, river and reservoir sediment, vegetation, small mammals, crayfish, fish, road kill, and foodstuffs from the Laboratory and surrounding areas for the analyses of radionuclides, metals, and organic chemicals.
- Assist with maintaining and managing beehives used for environmental monitoring purposes.
- Collect benthic macroinvertebrates for taxonomic identification to be used in ecological assessments.
- Maintain sampling and monitoring equipment, containers, records, log books, storage facilities, and other laboratory and field equipment.
Environmental Technician 3 ($59,200 - $96,100)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level
- Lead fieldwork unsupervised after appropriate training.
- Assist with maintaining and updating environmental databases, assist with managing records, and preparing data tables.
Minimum
Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated ability to work safely and securely in the field.
- The ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both oral and written forms.
- General knowledge of natural resources field techniques and measurements.
- Ability to read and navigate with topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to determine exact locations of project areas.
- Ability to follow procedures and record field data correctly and clearly; attention to detail.
- Have the physical ability to tolerate varying environmental conditions, hike long distances while carrying loads of 30 pounds over rough, uneven, and steep terrain, and work long hours in outdoor environments, including early mornings and late evenings.
- Driver's license and safe driving skills in off-road scenarios.
Job Requirements for Environmental Technician 3
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
- Ability to lead fieldwork independently with little to no supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to perform data entry.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and 1-2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and 2-4 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications- Self-initiating, communicative work style with very strong interpersonal and collaborative-work capabilities.
- General skill in investigating and suggesting alternative solutions and logistics for field work.
- Experience ensuring environmental work, materials, processes, and final products meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements.
- Experience working with, identifying, handling, or sampling plants, invertebrates, or wildlife.
- Willingness to participate in other field tasks that are being undertaken by the group as needed.
- Experience with towing and driving a boat.
