Position: Special Materials Machinist 1

Overview

Sigma-1, Fabrication Manufacturing Sciences, is looking for highly motivated machinists to support R&D component manufacturing within the Machining and Inspection (M&I) Team. The M&I Team operates a modernized shop that includes manual and CNC turning, milling, wire EDM, and 3D printing. The team supports the Sigma Division’s programmatic work including Foundry, Thermomechanical Processing operations, and Welding & Joining, among others.

What You Will Do

The successful applicant will perform manufacturing operations, primarily machining, on a wide range of materials, including some special materials with hazards (radiation, pyrophoric, etc.), to produce high quality components and subassemblies for production/experimental programs and special projects.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability to work with hazardous materials.
  • Basic knowledge in setting up and operating machine equipment; experience with CAD/CAM software, including creating CAD/CAM code and G-code/M-code for machining operations.
  • Basic ability to perform non-routine tasks with supervision that require independent judgment and working from general instructions on new assignments.
  • Basic knowledge of manufacturing parts made from typical materials while working safely within an industrial environment.
  • Entry-level ability to perform precision measurements to meet quality requirements.
  • Entry-level ability to use hand tools, shop equipment, manual machines, and CNC equipment with supervision.
  • Ability to understand basic machining processes, tools, operations, measurements, shop mathematics, and material properties; ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Some knowledge of applied material properties.
Education/Experience

Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent AND student enrollment in a laboratory approved machining pipeline program (Associate's degree or Apprenticeship).

Desired Qualifications
  • Active Q clearance.
  • Experience with ultrasonic machining equipment.
  • Experience working with ceramic materials.
Essential Job Functions
  • Good hand-eye coordination and fine motor control.
  • Ability to lift/carry 30-40 lbs.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain rigorous training as required.
Work Location

Onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position to be eligible to apply for posted jobs laboratory-wide. The position commitment for this role is 1 year.

Multiple positions will be filled at the Special Materials Machinist 1-5 levels depending on qualifications and experience. Due to federal restrictions, certain nationalities are prohibited from accessing facilities that support national security laboratory missions.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires favorable decision by NNSA indicating suitability under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (U.S. citizen requirement; foreign nationals subject to DOE orders).
Clearance: Q clearance. Background investigation required. U.S. citizenship generally required to obtain a Q clearance. Some positions may require additional authorization to access classified information.
