What You Will Do

As a part of the Safeguards and Technology Group within the Nuclear Engineering and Nonproliferation (NEN) Division, you will play a crucial role in supporting nuclear engineering projects aimed at promoting safety and nonproliferation. This role is intended for an early-career machinist and emphasizes hands-on manufacturing, learning, and collaboration with engineers and senior machinists. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Fabricate precision mechanical parts and assemblies from engineering drawings using manual and/or CNC machine tools.
  • Operate machine tools such as mills, lathes, drill presses, and saws under supervision or guidance.
  • Assist in the setup, operation, and basic programming of CNC equipment, as appropriate for experience level.
  • Perform measurement and inspection of machined parts using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and other metrology tools.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and work instructions.
  • Assist with prototype development, modification, and repair of mechanical components.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area; perform routine machine maintenance as instructed.
  • Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees. Maintains required safety and security training, assures safety and security compliance, and makes safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.

Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and other machinists to support laboratory projects and schedules. In this role, you will collaborate closely with a skilled team of engineers and technicians to drive the success of our nonproliferation and safeguard initiatives.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Foundational knowledge of machining principles and practices, obtained through coursework, training programs, or hands-on experience.
  • Ability to operate manual machine tools (e.g., mills and lathes) at an entry level.
  • Experience using basic precision measurement tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers).
  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings and specifications.
  • Basic understanding of shop safety practices, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Willingness to learn new machining techniques, tools, and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Contribute to a healthy and inclusive work environment. This includes ability to resolve conflict in a positive way, give and receive feedback effectively, and always show kindness and respect towards others.

Education/Experience

Position requires an Associate's Degree in one of the following fields from an accredited institution completed within the past 3 years with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale in one of the following fields, or a closely related technical field.

  • Manufacturing Technology
  • Mechanical Technology
  • Or a closely related technical field

Desired Qualifications:

  • Introductory experience with CNC machining or CNC programming (e.g., G-code exposure).
  • Experience machining a variety of materials such as aluminum, steel, or plastics.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM software or shop documentation systems.
  • Prior internship, apprenticeship, or shop experience in a manufacturing or research environment.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Schedule: A 5-40 or 9-80 schedule during normal working hours.
