What You Will Do
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking an accomplished senior leader to serve as Division Leader for Environmental Protection and Compliance (EPC-DO) within the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality (ALDESHQ). This position provides strategic, operational, and technical leadership for a diverse portfolio of environmental protection, regulatory compliance, and waste management programs that enable mission execution while protecting workers, the public, and the environment.
The Division Leader reports directly to the Associate Laboratory Director for Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality and plays a critical role in aligning environmental stewardship with national security mission priorities.
As the EPC Division Leader, you will:
- Provide strategic vision, leadership, and accountability for Laboratory-wide environmental protection, compliance, and sustainability programs.
- Direct and oversee compliance with a broad portfolio of federal and State of New Mexico regulatory frameworks, including but not limited to:
- Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)
- National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
- Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act
- DOE Orders and Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
- Biological, cultural, and land resource protection
- Lead regulatory engagement and sustain trusted, professional relationships with oversight agencies such as DOE/NNSA, the Los Alamos Site Office, and the New Mexico Environment Department.
- Ensure effective policy development, implementation, and flow-down of regulatory requirements across Laboratory operations.
- Drive fact-based decision-making to anticipate, mitigate, and resolve environmental risk, compliance challenges, and liability exposure.
- Champion a customer-focused service model that supports programmatic mission success while maintaining compliance excellence.
- Lead workforce planning, succession management, mentoring, recruiting, and retention of a highly skilled, multidisciplinary environmental staff.
- Manage resources, budgets, and performance metrics to ensure operational excellence and continuous improvement.
- Promote Laboratory objectives related to Integrated Safety Management (ISM), quality, sustainability, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated success as a senior leader managing complex environmental, regulatory, or compliance organizations with increasing scope and responsibility.
- Extensive knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations, permitting processes, and compliance systems.
- Proven ability to lead technical organizations through strategic planning, execution, and change in a highly regulated environment.
- Strong record of stakeholder engagement, including regulators, customers, and executive leadership.
- Demonstrated experience managing budgets, personnel, and organizational performance in a large, complex institution.
- Exceptional communication, collaboration, and consensus-building skills.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 15 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Advanced knowledge of LANL operations, facilities, and organizational structure.
- Direct experience working with DOE/NNSA, federal and state regulators, and legal or contractual partners.
- Demonstrated leadership in environmental stewardship, sustainability initiatives, and organizational transformation.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
