What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Health and Safety Technician 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Health and Safety Technician 3The Health and Safety (HS) Technician provides support to line managers and facility personnel by assisting health and safety professionals with collection of personnel air samples, swipe and bulk sampling, area sampling, real-time sampling, and inspection of areas or review of operations to ensure compliance with Laboratory and regulatory requirements.
Health and Safety Technician 4In addition to the tasks listed for level 3, the incumbent will support a variety of programs as needed. The selected candidate will be assigned to one or more programs based on needs. Incumbent demonstrates skills and knowledge beyond those expected at level 3, applies extensive knowledge and skills to complete specialized tasks, and has full knowledge of related disciplines. Candidates must promote safety, security, and quality in all operations and promote teamwork within and across the Laboratory.
ShiftworkPosition may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.
What You Need MinimumJob Requirements
- Ability to learn and work to technical objective of industrial hygiene and safety assignments.
- Ability to work effectively, conscientiously, and professionally in a high-performance team environment that exhibits collaborative behavior.
- Knowledge and implementation of required safety practices in a laboratory environment.
- Knowledge of relevant health and safety regulations and requirements.
- Knowledge of Laboratory and federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures pertaining to industrial hygiene/safety.
- Ability to research information sources (e.g., material safety data sheets, health hazard information module, regulations, standards, other agencies and experts) for health effects data applicable to work operations.
- Ability to use automation applications (e.g., spreadsheets, graphics, database management, communication practices, compliance tracking systems).
- Basic experience utilizing equipment and tools.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.
Job Requirements for Higher Level Title
- Knowledge of OSHA requirements, NFPA life safety code, CFR 1910 and 1926, and other relevant health and safety regulations.
- Skilled in the preparation and presentation of complex industrial hygiene/safety reports.
- Ability to make decisions and recommendations that significantly affect the content, interpretation, and development of Laboratory policies and programs concerning critical matters within the health and safety occupational series.
- Well‑versed on topics that are considered critical to emerging issues in the specialized aspects of health and safety, which could have significant impact to the Laboratory health and safety.
Lower level (Tech
3) – Minimum of a High School Diploma and 2‑4 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Technical institute graduate or associate’s degree may be preferred.
Higher level (Tech
4) – Minimum of a High School Diploma and 4‑6 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional training, certification, and/or education may be expected, including associate’s degrees and graduation from technical institutions.
- Working knowledge, and demonstrated application, of DOE requirements related to industrial hygiene and safety.
- Broad knowledge of LANL organizations, operations, and activities.
- Knowledge and application of Integrated Work Management and other industrial hygiene and safety procedures.
- Depth perception, binocular vision, reading vision, ability to speak, ability to discriminate speech.
- Ability to hear in a normal range (500–3000 Hz).
