What You Will Do
The Occupational Nurse 2 applies nursing principles and provides direct nursing care to Laboratory employees with the goal of conserving the health of workers and maintaining a safe and healthful environment. The Occupational Nurse 2 applies nursing care within the scope of both the New Mexico Nurse Practice Act and occupational health standing orders and protocols.
An experienced professional with a full understanding of specialized area plus working knowledge of other related fields. Applies Laboratory objectives to resolve a wide range of issues in creative ways. This job is a fully qualified, career‑oriented level position. Contributes to the development of organizations' goals and objectives. Erroneous decisions or recommendations would normally result in the inability to reach crucial organizational objectives and may have adverse effects on employee health and wellbeing.
Works under limited direction; receives general instructions on new assignments. Work is evaluated upon completion to ensure objectives have been met.
- Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees. Assures safety and security compliance, maintains required safety and security training, and makes safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.
- Collaborates with on‑site medical and psychological providers. Serves on interdisciplinary teams.
- Operational responsibility for assigned occupational health surveillance and regulatory programs. Takes initiative to familiarize with current program regulations and maintain up to date knowledge.
- Engages with occupational health professionals and field health and safety professionals on related matters such as ergonomics, behavioral health, safety programs, industrial hygiene and other relevant stakeholders.
- Manages patient flow/care process; initiates nursing diagnoses, intervention, referral and follow‑up on a variety of occupational and non‑occupational patient/employee issues; performs moderately complex range of return to work, fitness for duty and work restriction evaluations; initiates emergent/urgent care patient evaluation, triage and emergency interventions, protocols, including response to contamination incidents.
- Supports the orientation/training of new occupational health nurses.
- Develops and/or implements preventive medicine, health promotion, and employee screening and education initiatives.
- Utilizes process improvement techniques and quality assurance/improvement principles to define, understand, and correct OM issues and enhance services.
- Understands and adheres to all Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance and governance specific to occupational health.
- Ensures all occupational health results, materials, processes and final products meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements.
- Fosters a mutually respectful and inclusive work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.
Minimum
Job Requirements:
- Proficiency in computer use, office software, and web interfaces.
- Working knowledge of and experience with effective communication techniques.
- Strong customer focus with ability to interact with a large cross section of colleagues, customers, and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to initiate nursing diagnosis, interventions, referral and follow‑up on a variety of patient/employee health issues, including handling of urgent/emergent clinical problems, performing return to work, fitness for duty, and restriction evaluations.
Training/
Certifications:
- Current certification and skill in basic life support (BLS).
- Current Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of New Mexico
Education/
Experience:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or related degree and 2 to 5 years of Clinical Nursing experience in acute care nursing (emergency and/or urgent care preferred).
