Position: Metallography Scientist (Scientist 2)

Power Supply & Production organization (PSP-6) leads and executes various key missions to support our nation's security and space endeavors. We proudly support Pu-238 science and manufacturing for NASA's exploration missions, U.S. defense programs, and domestic production for well logging applications.

This role works in a team environment within LANL's nuclear facility to manufacture product, support material movement and support glove box operations. Processes at Los Alamos National Lab are performed using detailed operating procedures and work requires extensive knowledge and expertise following Conduct of Operations, nuclear criticality safety, material control and accountability, radiological safety and environmental compliance requirements.

Job Requirements:

You will assist in the development of solutions for complex problems, evaluate and optimize current processes. Your duties will require experience and skills towards research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of engineering and technology solutions in support and operations.

Scientific Background: Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in one or more of the following areas: vacuum systems, particle size analysis, microscopy (optical and electron), metallography, actinide science, materials processing, or other scientific field of relevance.

Problem Solving: Demonstrated ability to work across organizational lines and conduct extensive research to resolve difficult issues.

Project Development: Knowledge of and experience in designing, planning and executing research and development projects. Familiarity with development of new methods, techniques, or approaches to address critical technical problems. Experience meeting deliverables on schedule.

Communication: Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills as evidenced by publications, presentations, and report development.

Education/

Experience:

Positions requires a Bachelor' degree in a STEM field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation.

DOE Order 426.2: Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in science or engineering or related science, 2 years of job-related experience and 1 year of nuclear experience.

Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of quality implementation
  • Knowledge of existing NNSA/DOE requirements related to nuclear and high hazard facility operations
  • Experience working in glove boxes or atmosphere-controlled boxes
  • Knowledge and familiarity with troubleshooting process equipment
  • Knowledge of project management and project controls
  • Familiarity with Good Laboratory Practices (Conduct of Maintenance, Conduct of Operations)
  • An active DOE Q clearance is highly desired
Location

This position will be in Los Alamos, NM.

Position Commitment

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Work

Schedule

This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for the shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.
