Position: Mechanical Cognizant System (WETF) Engineer 3/4

What You Will Do

The Engineering Services (ES) Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. ES Groups are responsible for implementing the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at Los Alamos National Laboratory in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations, as well as supporting existing systems, modifications and customers occupying the facilities.

This position is within the Engineering Services - Weapons Facilities Operations (ES‑WFO) Group and supports the Weapons Engineering Tritium Facility (WETF) as a Mechanical Cognizant System Engineer. You will serve as owner of multiple accredited facility systems, including tritium process systems, structural fire protection systems, and other systems needed to operate a leading research and development Hazard Category 2 nuclear facility.

Note:

This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 or 4 level depending on the skills and/or experience of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Nuclear Facilities Engineer Level 3 (Salary $128,000‑$215,900)

As a CSE assigned to Vital Safety Systems at WETF, you will serve as the best integrated source of expert knowledge for a given system or component. Responsibilities include providing a technical interface to existing facility systems, controlling and maintaining the technical baseline and master equipment list, reviewing and approving design modification outputs, evaluating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and replacing facility support equipment, coordinating with multiple disciplines, and supporting configuration management.

  • Assess, maintain, and upgrade systems at WETF to support facility operations and programmatic needs
  • Represent system owner for Configuration Management, Technical Support to Operations, System Health Status and Performance, and Technical Support to Programs and Projects
  • Lead research, assemble, and evaluate information or data regarding nuclear facility practices or applicable regulatory changes, recommending sound, practical solutions to moderately complex issues
  • Communicate with stakeholders across most areas of the project
  • Lead significant portions of nuclear facility engineering projects or teams to meet mission deliverables
  • Represent Engineering Services Division as a leader in effective project execution
  • Review and approve conceptual and detailed designs that ensure third‑party designs are code‑compliant and meet customer needs
  • Mentor lower‑level System Engineers
  • Assess condition of existing facilities and infrastructure systems
  • Apply engineering judgement to challenges
  • Scope both internally and externally executed design projects
  • Review high‑level design deliverables including drawings, specifications, TIPs, SSIs, and calculations
  • Assist in annual preventive maintenance and in‑service inspections
  • Adhere to LANL's Engineering Standards, Conduct of Engineering, and prevailing codes and standards
  • Support organizational initiatives for improvement of design and business practices
  • Lead structural engineering activities supporting facility design, operation and maintenance
Nuclear Facilities Engineer Level 4 (Salary $153,600‑$266,500)

In addition to the Level 3 responsibilities, you will identify and lead activities within a nuclear facility engineering discipline, demonstrating initiative, technical depth, and leadership in complex project environments. You must be able to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team, applying broad knowledge of nuclear facility engineering principles and practices in the preparation and execution of nuclear facility engineering deliverables.
