Overview
The Engineering Services Group in the Weapons Facilities Operations area (ES-WFO) at Los Alamos National Laboratory develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. ES-WFO is responsible for implementing the Conduct of Engineering (CoE) program in support of system, structure, and component modifications and new installations.
This position supports the Weapons Engineering Tritium Facility (WETF) as a Mechanical Cognizant System Engineer, serving as system owner for multiple accredited facility systems and working with the cognizant system engineering team on tritium process systems, fire protection systems, and other systems required to operate a Hazard Category 2 nuclear facility.
- Serve as Cognizant System Engineer (CSE) for assigned Vital Safety Systems at WETF.
- Provide a technical interface to existing facility systems, control the technical baseline, and maintain the master equipment list (MEL) for assigned systems.
- Review and concur with design modification outputs (FDAR) and evaluate, maintain, troubleshoot, and replace facility support equipment; coordinate with multiple disciplines.
- Support configuration management of assigned systems and follow LANL Conduct of Engineering (CoE) program, engineering standards, and related codes and standards.
- Perform regular facility system walkdowns and develop System Health Reports; provide input for preventative maintenance schedules.
- Maintain and manage high-quality design deliverables, including reviews of drawings, specifications, test and inspection plans (TIPs), statements of special inspections (SSIs), and calculations.
- Lead initiatives to improve design and business practices and ensure third-party designs are code-compliant and meet customer needs.
- Scope and manage internal and external design projects and provide technical support to operations and maintenance, programs, and projects.
- Develop mentoring and training for junior staff.
- Define requirements for purchasing technical goods and services requiring nuclear facility quality assurance.
- Implement project plans for design, installation, commissioning, or operation of nuclear facility systems.
- Control and maintain the MEL for assigned systems.
Job Requirements
- Demonstrated engineering experience with projects involving design for new facilities and facility modifications.
- Experience developing engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, TIPs, and SSIs.
- Knowledge of nuclear facility engineering in one or more roles (e.g., system engineer, project engineer, design engineer, or nuclear criticality safety analysis).
- Understanding of nuclear facility engineering principles, codes, standards, and administrative practices.
- Working knowledge of industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA codes, standards, and criteria relevant to the discipline.
- Ability to articulate concepts through oral and written communication with technical and business acumen.
- Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and 2 years of practical work experience. Engineer in Training (EIT) registration is highly desirable.
- Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience. Advanced degree is highly desired. EIT is highly desirable.
This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, which sets entry-level requirements for DOE nuclear facilities. DOE 426.2 allows concurrent on-the-job training for qualified candidates.
Desired Qualifications- Engineering degree and/or experience with facility engineering/systems.
- Facility operations or engineering experience within a nuclear facility.
- Design experience in nuclear, accelerator, or industrial facility operations.
- Knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and CoE principles.
Onsite in Los Alamos, NM. Management reserves the right to determine work locations.
Additional Details- Directive 206.2 – Employment with Triad requires favorable NNSA decision for suitability; applies to U.S. citizens. Foreign nationals are subject to DOE orders.
