Position: Facility Operator (Operator 3)

What You Will Do

You will report to the CWF‑RLW Operations Manager. You will be responsible for the operation of the Radioactive Liquid Waste facility, operating liquid waste processing equipment including micro‑filters, reverse osmosis units and evaporators. Processing will include both Low Level Radioactive Waste and Transuranic waste. You will also be responsible for administrative duties such as work document and engineering design reviews, and initiating and tracking material procurement.

Job Requirements:

Wastewater Treatment:
Extensive knowledge and experience with the operation of wastewater treatment processing and of water and wastewater treatment process equipment and requirements.

Facility Operations/Maintenance Activities
  • Knowledge and experience in a wide variety of facility operations and maintenance activities including, but not limited to, mechanical, electrical, or chemical processing systems.
  • Knowledge and experience with mechanical and piping systems in a radiological facility.
  • Knowledge and experience with crane and forklift operations.
  • Working knowledge of the principles of Department of Energy (DOE) Order 5480.19, Conduct of Operations Requirements for DOE Facilities.
Safety Practices

Expert knowledge of Integrated Work Management principles, understanding of, and ability to identify work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration.

Lock‑out/Tag‑out Policies and Procedures

Extensive knowledge of execution, tracking and maintaining surveillance procedures, and experience with lock‑out/tag‑out policies and procedures and execution.

Interpretation of Drawings

Ability to understand and interpret various physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics and knowledge in the design, fabrication and installation of mechanical systems. Experience in isometric drawings and technical design.

Problem Solving

Independently conducts research, investigates alternative solutions, and recommends solutions on problems affecting facility equipment maintenance and operations.

Training/Certifications

A New Mexico Wastewater Level III or IV license, or a combination of 10‑15 years of mechanical piping experience is required for this position. Applicants, per DOE Order 5480.20A, must be entered in the low‑level radioactive liquid waste treatment processes qualification program and must complete qualification within 6 months.

Education/Experience

Position requires an Associate’s Degree and 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Requires a High School Diploma.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge of Wastewater Processing.

Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 2 years.
