This is a full‑time Engineering Technologist role supporting the Advanced Sources and Detector (ASD) Project Office at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The ASD Project is responsible for the fabrication, installation, and commissioning of Scorpius, a ~20 MeV linear induction electron accelerator. Scorpius will support subcritical experiment diagnostics at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS), located within the underground U1a complex (963 feet below ground) as part of the Enhanced Capabilities for Subcritical Experiments Program.
In this role, you will support the construction, assembly, integration, and testing of critical accelerator subsystems including IVA components, SAC subassemblies and assemblies, and LRU‑8 integration. You will work closely with engineers, technicians, subject matter experts, and safety personnel to plan, coordinate, and execute assembly activities while ensuring compliance with quality and project requirements. This position reports to ASD Operations and requires collaboration across Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), vendor partners, and NNSS.
LocationThis is an onsite role at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) and onsite in Mercury, NV. There is remote flexibility, but candidates should be ready to drive onsite to Mercury, NV. This is a 60‑90 mile commute from northern Las Vegas.
Key Responsibilities- Coordinate fabrication, assembly, staging, and testing of accelerator components (IVA, SAC assemblies, LRU‑8, and related subsystems)
- Plan and manage assembly activities, working with multidisciplinary technical and safety teams
- Lead assembly teams and assist with training and mentoring personnel
- Ensure components are inspected, staged, and compliant with quality assurance and project requirements (including DOE 413.3B)
- Identify and implement assembly process improvements
- Support subsystem integration and coordination across Scorpius systems
- Provide maintenance support for personnel and equipment
- Collaborate effectively with engineers, technicians, and operations teams across multiple laboratory divisions and national laboratories
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or related field
- Minimum 5 years of directly related experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Working knowledge of GD&T and mechanical drawings
- Experience with Solid Works and/or CREO
- Intermediate assembly experience from technical drawings and procedures
- Familiarity with vacuum systems (KF, CF), roughing and turbomolecular pumps
- Experience with Swagelok fittings, NPT plumbing, ANSI and metric threads
- Working knowledge of common lab test equipment
