Position: Structural Cognizant System (WETF) Engineer 3/4

What You Will Do

The Engineering Services (ES) Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory’s scientific and national security mission. ES groups implement the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at LANL in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations, as well as existing systems and customers occupying the facilities.

This position is within the Engineering Services – Weapons Facilities Operations (ES‑WFO) Group and supports the Weapons Engineering Tritium Facility (WETF) as a Structural Cognizant System Engineer. The engineer will serve as the owner of multiple accredited facility systems, including tritium process systems, structural fire protection systems, and other systems required for a leading research and development Hazard Category 2 nuclear facility.

Role

Level and Compensation

Position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 or 4 level depending on the skills and/or experience of the selected candidate. Compensation ranges are $128,000–$215,900 for Level 3 and $153,600–$266,500 for Level 4.

Responsibilities
  • Qualify as a Cognizant System Engineer (CSE) at LANL.
  • Assess, maintain, and upgrade systems at WETF to support facility operations and programmatic needs.
  • Act as system owner representative in areas such as configuration management, technical support to operations and maintenance, system health status, and technical support to programs and projects.
  • Lead in research and evaluation of information regarding nuclear facility practices or regulatory changes affecting engineering policies; recommend practical solutions.
  • Communicate with stakeholders across most areas of the project, serving as a recognized expert in nuclear facility engineering issues.
  • Lead significant portions of engineering projects or teams to meet mission deliverables.
  • Review and approve conceptual and detailed designs that are code‑compliant and meet customer needs.
  • Mentor lower‑level System Engineers.
  • Assess the condition of existing facilities and infrastructure systems.
  • Apply engineering judgment to complex challenges.
  • Scope internal and external design projects.
  • Review high‑level design deliverables including drawings, specifications, test and inspection plans (TIPs), statements of special inspections (SSIs), and calculations.
  • Assist in annual preventative maintenance and in‑service inspections.
  • Adhere to LANL’s Engineering Standards, Conduct of Engineering, and prevailing codes and standards.
  • Support organizational initiatives for improvement of design and business practices.
  • Identify and lead activities within structural engineering to support facility design, operation, and maintenance.
Minimum

Job Requirements
  • Broad‑based engineering experience with structural design for facility modifications.
  • Experience mentoring others, providing technical direction, and coordinating engineering activities.
  • In‑depth understanding of safety principles and hazard mitigation in nuclear or industrial facility operations.
  • Experience with engineering principles, codes, and standards (ASCE, ACI, AISC, NFPA, IBC).
  • Experience in development of engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, TIPs, and SSIs.
  • Experience scoping complex projects to produce cost estimates for design and construction.
  • Assist in defining maintenance requirements and tracking system performance.
  • Review design outputs for impact on technical baseline and master equipment lists.
  • Experience in a nuclear facility environment.
  • Knowledge of industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA complex codes and standards applicable to engineering disciplines.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, conveying complex technical issues to diverse audiences.
  • Experience in system, design, or project engineering within complex facility environments.
  • Ability to manage configuration, operability, and performance of assigned systems using a graded and risk‐informed approach.
