Position: TLW Facility Operator (Operator 4/5)

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at the Operator 4/5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. You will report to the CWF‑RLW Operations Manager and be responsible for operations of the Transuranic Liquid Waste facility (TLW). You will operate liquid waste processing equipment including micro‑filters, reverse osmosis units, and evaporators.

You will also handle administrative duties such as work document and engineering design reviews, and the initiation and tracking of material procurement. A New Mexico Wastewater license is preferred.

Operator 4

Fully qualified, experienced operator with significant subject matter expertise in related or similar facilities. Operates and monitors critical safety systems according to operating instructions. Responsible for safe execution of technical safety requirements and surveillances necessary to meet safety/authorization basis requirements. Performs technical tasks in support of operations, maintenance, science or engineering activities. Provides direct support in operations, specification, construction, and/or design of facility mechanical, electrical, and/or chemical systems.

Checks and inspects operation and maintenance against predetermined standards. Follows process sheets or written/verbal directions. Observes equipment and control panels for operator messages or error indicators. Sets up and runs diagnostic test and reacts appropriately to messages and reports errors or machine malfunctions as required. May work with and be responsible for multiple systems.

Operator 5

In addition to the responsibilities at the lower level, the operator will operate and monitor critical safety systems according to operating instructions and serve as the facility lead on off‑shifts, making technical decisions regarding safe operations of nuclear facilities. Performs technical tasks in support of operations, maintenance, science or engineering activities. Provides direct support in operations, specification, construction, and/or design of facility mechanical, electrical, and/or chemical systems.

Checks and inspects operation against predetermined standards. Follows process sheets or written/verbal directions. Observes equipment and control panels for operator messages or error indicators. Sets up and runs diagnostic test and reacts appropriately to messages and reports errors or machine malfunctions as required. May work with multiple systems.

What You Need Minimum

Job Requirements
  • Wastewater Treatment:
    Knowledge and experience with formal and safe operations as applied to a Wastewater facility and has a New Mexico Wastewater Level I or II license, or 3‑5 years of experience.
  • Knowledge and experience of water and wastewater treatment process equipment and requirements, to include:
    • Gravity filters, pressure filters, cartridge filters and microfiltration
    • Reverse osmosis
    • Evaporative boiler system
    • Ion exchange systems
    • Chemical feed systems
    • Chemical cleaning processes for microfiltration and reverse osmosis
    • Clarifier operations
    • Solids handling equipment
    • NPDES discharge requirements
    • Pressurized water and air systems
    • Concentrated acids and bases
    • Sampling protocol
    • SCADA system for monitoring and control
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication.
  • Confined space entry and respirator certification.
  • Knowledge and experience with crane and forklift operations.
  • Extensive and detained understanding of and ability to identify work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration. Experience with lock‑out/tag‑out policies and procedures and execution.
  • Expert knowledge of legal requirements and environmental impacts affecting facility maintenance and operations.
Additional Requirements at Higher Level
  • Wastewater Treatment:
    Expert experience with formal and safe operations as applied to Wastewater, and has a New Mexico Wastewater Level III or IV license, or 10 years of experience.
