Position: Analytical Chemist (Scientist 2)

What You Will Do

As a member of the Radiological Liquid Waste Operations Team, you will be responsible to provide analytical chemistry analyses in support of the treatment of radiological wastewater at the LANL radiological wastewater treatment facility located at TA-50-0001. You will report to the CWF‑RLWF Operations Manager.

You will assist senior chemists in the performance of radiological and non‑radiological analyses of aqueous, and occasionally sludge, samples. The performance of these analyses will include the performance of quality assurance practices including calibration of instruments and database entry of analytical results.

Non‑radiological analyses include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • pH
  • density
  • total dissolved solids
  • total suspended solids
  • moisture content
  • mass spectroscopy
  • ion chromatography
  • alkalinity
  • hardness
  • acidity
  • etc.

Radiological analyses include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • gross alpha
  • gross beta
  • gross gamma
  • tritium
  • isotopic determination of Pu‑238
  • isotopic determination of Pu‑239
  • isotopic determination of Am‑241
  • etc.

Safety and security are primary responsibilities for all Laboratory employees. Maintains required safety and security training and assures compliance; makes safety and security an integral part of every task. Takes steps to stop work if unsafe conditions exist or security is compromised.

Adheres to engineering policies, programs, procedures and practices.

Assists in the development of new methods, techniques or approaches to address technical problems.

What You Need Minimum

Job Requirements:

Chemicals: Significant knowledge of and experience in chemistry, chemical analyses or chemical engineering field.

Research and Development: Significant knowledge of and/or experience in designing, planning, and executing research and development projects.

Scientific Methods: Significant knowledge of and/or experience with application of the scientific method and with discipline‑relevant standards for the ethical conduct of research.

Communication: Strong interpersonal skills in both verbal and written communications and the ability to effectively communicate to all levels of staff.

Education/

Experience:

Positions requires a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience, typically with post‑doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation.

DOE Order 426.2A: Requires a Bachelor's of Science degree in engineering or a related science or technology, 2 years of job related experience, and 1 year of nuclear experience.

Qualifications:

Conduct of Operations: Familiarity with the concept of Conduct of Operations in the performance of essential work.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
