Position: Electro-Mechanical Technician I

Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) manages and operates the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) for the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Responsibilities

Dynamic Instruments is comprised of scientists, engineers, and technicians, and is the core for innovative diagnostic design, simulation, fabrication, characterization, and fielding in support of the NNSS' stockpile stewardship mission. The Technology Deployment Team is specifically responsible for providing quality technical support for stockpile stewardship experiments and other applications across the NNSA complex.

In this role, you will report to the Technology Deployment Supervisor and work as a member of a small team supporting engineers, scientists, and senior technicians in building, testing, and fielding complex diagnostic systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Utilize basic electronics, mechanical fabrication, instrumentation chassis assembly, and soldering techniques.
  • Assist in fiber probe fabrication, characterization, and design.
  • Develop spreadsheets, notes, and drawings to document lab diagnostic system changes.
  • Use laboratory instrumentation to synchronize and troubleshoot diagnostics systems such as digitizing storage oscilloscopes, multimeters, digital delay generators, high‑bandwidth analog and digital fiber links, and other electronic test and measurement equipment.
  • Support execution of program/project activities and data collection (e.g., classified systems/networks, diagnostics and laser systems).
  • Work under the direct supervision of experienced engineers, scientists, and technologists as part of a team developing and fielding a variety of unique and complex diagnostic systems.
  • Collaborate with a group of scientists, engineers, and technicians developing innovative solutions to customer‑driven applied R&D.
  • Travel to other MSTS locations for mission support and training (up to 10% of time).
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; some vocational training preferred.
  • Self‑motivated and able to complete assigned tasks alongside a technical mentor.
  • Basic computer and MS Office

    Skills:

    Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Experience with basic and powered hand tools.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and established procedures.
  • Ability to work safely in multiple unique environments with various hazards.
  • Ability to work with hands to assemble opto‑mechanical imaging systems in various lab settings.
  • Ability to work in dark settings for long periods of time.
  • Strong time‑management and organization skills; maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Experience with component‑level soldering of circuit boards (surface mount and through‑hole).
  • Working knowledge of computer programming (MATLAB, Lab View, Python) desirable.
  • Knowledge of drawing/design software such as Solid Works, Visio.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel for fielding efforts and training.
