Position: Industrial Engineer (R&D Engineer 2)

What You Will Do

Be part of an amazing engineering team at the nation's Plutonium Center of Excellence that supports our national nuclear deterrent. As an Industrial Engineer you will provide technical expertise and leadership in the design and development of process and quality improvement programs for the plutonium facility.

You will be a hands‑on Industrial Engineer with project leadership and problem‑solving skills, working in our collaborative team environment to conduct time studies, develop and implement work standards, and participate in new product development teams. Your work will directly support the manufacturing of weapon components, surveillance of weapon components and materials in the nuclear stockpile, and other national security missions.

What You Need Minimum

Job Requirements:
  • Education/

    Experience:

    Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
  • Knowledge of and experience in an engineering discipline such as designing, planning, and executing problem solving and process improvement projects.
  • The ability to perform cost‑benefit‑risk analysis/return on investment analysis.
  • Experience with the following:
    • Working with members from various process teams in a collaborative manner to collect data, make specific suggestions to collect and analyze data.
    • Recommending changes to processes based on the results of the analyses.
    • Defining post‑implementation monitoring and benefits and helping implement the changes.
      • You will be encouraged to be a champion of change and make presentations to the team and upper management at various points of the change study.
    • Working in a team environment with various process teams whose members would have varied levels of experience and expertise with the subject matter.

Qualifications:
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Lean, Six Sigma, and/or Lean Six Sigma certification from an accredited source (Green or Black Belt).
  • Knowledge/certification in lean manufacturing principles, statistical process control techniques, and Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing, safety, and quality requirements.
  • Experience in process improvement, process engineering, and/or industrial engineering.
  • Experience using Micro Strategy, Spider Strategies, and/or other data visualization tools.
  • Experience with Data Management, Data Cataloging, and/or Database understanding.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with system and subsystem qualification testing and/or analysis.
  • Experience championing changes project teams recommend.
    • Work with process teams and upper management to plan, schedule, and oversee the implementation of recommended changes.
  • Experience in data mining, data manipulation, and data analysis.
  • Certification and/or experience in change management techniques.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Conduct of Operations in a nuclear or radiological facility.
  • An active DOE Q‑level clearance.
Work Location:

The work location for this position is hybrid and located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within a 2‑hour ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position Commitment:

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
