Mechanical or Electro-Mechanical Technician (Engineered Systems Tec 2/3)
Los Alamos National Laboratory – TA-53 (LANSCE Accelerator), Los Alamos, NM.
Salary Range: $53,700 – $82,500 for EST‑2, $64,700 – $101,400 for EST‑3.
Responsibilities- Operate and maintain radioactive cooling and cryogenic systems (with oversight).
- Assistance with fabrication, testing, installation, and troubleshooting of mechanical hardware.
- Support heavy lifting with forklifts and cranes.
- Perform EST‑2 duties with less oversight when appointed to EST‑3 level.
- Develop technical solutions to complex problems and independently troubleshoot mechanical and electrical systems when at EST‑3 level.
- Operate and maintain complex systems including radioactive water cooling, high‑vacuum systems, helium refrigeration liquefying hydrogen to 20 K.
- Participate in continuous target system operation during beam delivery periods.
- Prioritize safety, reliability, and quality through high workmanship standards, redundancy, preventive maintenance and inventory control, detailed documentation, and staff development.
- Expertise in welding, machining, fabrication, radiological work, cryogenics, vacuum/pressure systems, and robotic remote handling systems.
- Experience in installation, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical or technical equipment/systems.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, manuals, and written instructions.
- Skilled in diagnosing malfunctions and replacing defective components.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a technical team.
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate problems and recommend effective solutions.
- Experience assisting in the design, fabrication, testing, and checkout of mechanical systems.
- Additional experience, education, or training in design, fabrication, and/or testing of mechanical systems.
- EST‑2:
High school diploma and a minimum of three years of related experience or equivalent education/experience. - EST‑3:
Associate’s degree in a related field and a minimum of 3 years of related experience or equivalent education/experience.
- Target Operator qualification within 2 years of hiring; training to independently operate all water, cryogenic, and vacuum systems.
- Experience with programmable logic controls (PLC), pressure, and/or vacuum systems.
- Experience in machining, welding, and general fabrication techniques.
- Experience in the electro‑mechanical field.
- Experience drafting detailed system schematics/P&IDs.
- Experience following formal procedures.
- Exposure to radiological, chemical, mechanical, and cryogenic hazards.
- Requires wearing multiple layers of PPE and respiratory protection during radiological work.
- 24/7 rotating on‑call schedule.
- Lift up to 50 lbs and climb stairs and ladders.
The position is onsite at TA‑53 (LANSCE Accelerator) in Los Alamos, NM.
Work CommitmentRegular appointment employees must serve a continuous service period in their current position to be eligible for post‑employment jobs. The commitment for this position is one year.
