Project Engineer 1/2 Role at Los Alamos National Laboratory
Join the Engineering Services Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory as a Project Engineer 1/2. The Division develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. This position is within the Engineering Services Weapons Project Delivery (ES-WPD) group and supports nuclear, accelerator, and non‑nuclear facilities across the Laboratory.
WhatYou Will Do
Assist in technical engineering activities related to the planning, design, execution, and close‑out of projects. Identify and lead activities and manage development of projects with an integrated project team (IPT) that includes customers, stakeholders, subject matter experts, and others. Depending on the selected level the responsibilities will vary.
- Project Engineer 1 ($94,500 - $154,600):
Learn about project engineering from seasoned engineers; apply engineering skills to national security projects; develop engineering judgement; grow leadership skills. - Project Engineer 2 ($104,100 - $172,200):
Act as the lead technical representative; manage scoping and design phases; forecast resources; review progress against schedules and budgets; coordinate with LANL Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) representatives; apply Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS) and performance reporting.
Job Requirements
- 2 years of experience and fundamental knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, technical methods, and technology‑aided engineering tools for conventional facility and operations‑based engineering problems.
- Familiarity with engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies.
- Articulation of concepts through oral and written communication.
- Critical thinking in complex problem solving; presentation of options and recommendations.
- Reading and interpretation of drawings, specifications, and contract language.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and Adobe Acrobat.
- Project Engineer 2 additional qualifications: 3 years relevant job experience; sound knowledge of project engineering processes consistent with the duties described above; 2–3 years of experience with work planning, scheduling, and cost estimating; independent judgment in engineering techniques; knowledge of infrastructure/utilities codes and standards; experience with scoping, design, construction, change management.
- Project Engineer 1:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution and 2 years of practical work experience. - Project Engineer 2:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution and at least 3 years of practical work experience; advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
- Engineer in Training Certificate.
- Experience producing designs with AutoCAD tools.
- Knowledge of DOE O 413.B program and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principles.
- Experience in DOE/NNSA non‑reactor nuclear facilities or radiological projects.
- Advanced degree in a relevant field.
Onsite, located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the management discretion.
Position CommitmentRegular appointment employees are required to serve a continuous service period in their current position to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. The position commitment for this role is one year.
