Position: Electrical Engineer 1/2

Electrical Engineer 1/2 – Los Alamos National Laboratory

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled Nuclear Facilities Electrical Engineer to join our Engineering Services Division.

What You Will Do

As a talented electrical engineer, you will support critical nuclear facilities, design, analyze, and troubleshoot electrical systems, and ensure compliance with safety, security, and quality standards.

  • Develop and maintain diverse electrical engineering capabilities across LANL's nuclear, accelerator, and non-nuclear facilities.
  • Implement the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program, ensuring proper modification and installation of systems across the 38-square-mile campus.
  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to design, analyze, and troubleshoot electrical systems for nuclear facilities.
  • Provide engineering consulting services across all project phases – scoping, design, construction, commissioning, and operations.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant safety, security, and quality standards.
Electrical Engineer Levels Level 1 – Salary Range: $94,500 – $154,600

Level 2 – Salary Range: $104,100 – $172,200

Additional responsibilities and growth opportunities:

  • Run all electrical engineering facets of a project from scoping to construction independently.
  • Foster relationships with project stakeholders and customers as an Engineering Services representative.
  • Facilitate the technical growth of the electrical design team.
What You Need – Minimum

Job Requirements
  • Prepare calculations, apply engineering methods, and use technology-aided engineering tools.
  • Support timely and collaborative construction execution, including reviews of submittals, RFIs, design changes, non-conformance issues, and commissioning documentation.
  • Basic knowledge of engineering principles, codes, and standards (NEC, NFPA, IEEE, etc.).
  • Experience in power system engineering: fault current analysis, voltage-drop calculations, protection coordination studies, incident energy studies, and equipment sizing.
Requirements for Higher Level (Level
2)
  • Demonstrated design experience in commercial and/or government sectors.
  • Experience developing engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, TIPs, and SSIs.
  • Experience scoping complex projects and estimating engineering costs.
Education/Experience

Electrical Engineer 1: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution and 2 years of practical work experience. Advanced or technical degree preferred. Current EIT registration highly desirable.

Electrical Engineer 2: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience. Advanced or technical degree preferred. Current PE registration highly desirable.

Desired Qualifications
  • Design experience in nuclear, accelerator, or industrial facility operations.
  • Experience producing designs with AutoCAD and/or Revit.
  • Knowledge of DOE, LANL Engineering Standards, and COE principles and procedures.
Work Location

Onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at management’s discretion.

Position Commitment

Regular appointment employees must serve a continuous service period to be eligible to apply for posting. Commitment for this position is one year.
