What You Will Do
The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Isotope Program (IP) within Inorganic Isotope & Actinide Chemistry group (C-IIAC) is recognized worldwide for their R&D and production of radionuclides for medical and industrial applications. The program is seeking an Isotope Production Facility (IPF) Operator to provide electro/mechanical and operational support for the irradiation of production and R&D targets at the IPF at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE).
An IPF operator is responsible for supporting both routine irradiation activities and research experiments, facility maintenance including radiological work, assisting in the troubleshooting and maintenance of complex IPF systems (computer control systems, water purification and recycle systems, radiological systems), as well as providing 24/7 off hours and on call support. The successful candidate will also participate in research associated with developing production methods for novel isotopes and applications.
Irradiations and maintenance will be performed in a facility that includes a Hot Cell designed to handle high dose rate materials.
The successful candidate will be required to:
- Serve as an IPF operator to conduct irradiation activities and to provide technical support for associated electro/mechanical systems.
- Assist in fabricating, installing, maintaining, and repairing electro-mechanical systems critical to the operation of the Isotope Production Facility.
- Support scheduled after hours on-call periods, requiring a 45 minute call-in response time.
- Assist with target loading and shipping operations including receiving and maintaining a CDL driver's license with HAZMAT endorsement.
- With consideration of ALARA, work in high radiation areas with contaminated and activated items, including work requiring respiratory protection.

Minimum
Job Requirements:
Engineered Systems Tec 3 ($64,700 - $101,400)
- Experience with installation, testing, repair, and maintenance of electro-mechanical equipment, pneumatic or hydraulic systems, and/or control systems.
- Solid understanding of technical concepts and designs.
- The ability to learn safe and responsible handling of highly radioactive and hazardous materials including the use of manipulators for remote handling of materials in hot cells and wearing a respirator.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, including effective interpersonal skills with management, team members, other employees and customers.
- Ability to obtain Q-clearance which typically requires US citizenship.
- Ability to read and understand written or verbal instructions, blueprints, drawings, layouts, and other related specifications.
- Experience with data trending and analysis.
- Experience with Electrical/Mechanical system fabrication.

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
- Proven ability to meet deliverables in a fast paced and dynamic environment.
- Experience developing and working from formal drawings/schematics.
- Experience with data trending and analysis.
- Demonstrated experience developing technical document/procedures and work documents.
- Electrical / Mechanical system design experience.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires an Associates' Degree in a related field and a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired
Qualifications:
- Current experience in safely operating a complicated process or facility under formal conduct of operations, such as the operation of a charged-particle accelerator or nuclear power reactor.
- Familiarity with computer control systems (PLC).
- Experience with electronics test equipment
- Applied knowledge of computer-aided design (CAD) software and industrial control software. Competency in the use of proficiency software such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Experience preforming radiological work in PPE (respirator etc.).
- Experience with tele-manipulators
- US Navy nuclear reactor operator training
