What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated, self-driven Packaging R&D Engineer 1/2 to join the Nuclear Materials and TRU Waste Shipping Group (NPI-7).

NPI-7 ensures safe, efficient and compliant management of all radioactive and hazardous material generated at the TA-55 Plutonium Facility, the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research (CMR) building, the TA-50 Radioactive Liquid Waste Treatment Facility (RLWTF), the Transuranic Waste Facility (TWF), and the Radiological Laboratory Utility Office Building (RLUOB). The group also manages nuclear material shipments and provides other support to these facilities, including safeguards support.

NPI-7 ensures that all activities in these facilities are conducted in compliance with applicable environmental regulations and Laboratory policies. This is your opportunity to make a meaningful difference by supporting critical research that directly impacts national security.

• R&D Engineer 1:
  Work with engineers, researchers, technicians, DOE personnel, and other DOE sites to evaluate radioactive materials, evaluate tooling and equipment, and determine packaging requirements for NPI-7. Help develop and implement new packaging processes to provide solutions for future shipping needs at the LANL Plutonium Facility. Stay current on regulatory requirements and emerging technologies related to packaging and transportation of radioactive materials.
• R&D Engineer 2:
  In addition to the responsibilities at the R&D Engineer 1 level, assist in developing technical products such as procedures and reports, contribute to the development of intellectual property, set direction and goals for defined tasks involving more than one person, scope tasks within a project and define deliverables at the task level, lead specific project tasks to meet scope, schedule and budget, provide peer review of others’ work across organizations, and mentor junior staff and peers in technical and professional growth.

  Experience:
  
  Working knowledge in one or more engineering disciplines: electrical, mechanical, nuclear or another R&D engineering field.

  Experience:
  
  Demonstrated knowledge of principles related to radioactive decay processes, interaction of radiation and matter, and radiation protection.
• Integrated Safety Management: Demonstrated knowledge of integrating safety into work practices by addressing hazards to ensure safety for workers, the public, and the environment.

• Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 1 level: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution related to the occupation plus 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

• Documentation of Work: Demonstrated ability to develop technical products such as procedures and reports.
• Compliance: Demonstrated experience in conducting engineering work in ES&H-compliant environments with appropriate controls and procedures.
• Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 2 level: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Type A and Type B Shipping Containers: Experience with packing and unpacking shipping containers for transport of radioactive materials.
• Leak Test Equipment: Understanding of leak test methods and experience with leak test equipment.
• Engineering Design: Experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software and production of detailed mechanical drawings.
