Project Engineer, Engineering Design & Technologists

Position: Project Engineer 3/4

What You Will Do

The Engineering Services Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. This position is within the Engineering Services Weapons Project Delivery (ES-DO) group. ES Groups are responsible for implementing the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at Los Alamos National Laboratory in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations.

This position supports nuclear, accelerator or non-nuclear facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory and promotes a workplace culture centered on mutual respect and inclusiveness.

Note:

This position will be filled at the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 or Nuclear Facilities Engineer 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Project Engineer 3 ($125,200 - $211,300)

As a Project Engineer, you will act as the lead technical representative for engineering activities related to planning, design, execution, and closeout of projects. You will be expected to lead and manage development of projects with an integrated project team (IPT) that includes both customers, stakeholders, subject matter experts and others. The work requires the following duties:

• Lead the integrated project team on all technical matters related to a project
• Work as a subcontract administrator for design subcontracts
• Develop cost estimates
• Manage technical requirements for construction
• Leading closeout activities
• Adhere to LANL's Engineering Standards, Conduct of Engineering, prevailing codes and standards
• Plan, forecast, and identify necessary engineering resources
• Work with the LANL Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) representatives
• Resolve field-initiated questions on engineering, visits to jobsite, aid in the resolution of construction related technical issues
• Make recommendations for engineering management
• Mentor other project engineers
• Support projects in DOE/NNSA nonreactor nuclear facilities and radiological facilities

Project Engineer 4 ($150,300 - $260,800)

In addition to what is outlined for Project Engineer 3, Project Engineer 4 performs the following duties:

• Function as a team leader for other project engineers and provides oversight of their work
• Aid in developing training presentations
• Seek out work for new and existing customers within LANL
• Lead initiatives to improve the organization

Minimum

Job Requirements Project Engineer 3

• Minimum 6 years experience working with design and construction contracts
• Minimum 6 years experience in cost engineering functions, including cost estimating, cost control, financial reporting systems, and cost and variance analysis
• Demonstrate project management and execution experience, including detailed engineering, and construction work processes and procedures
• Demonstrated knowledge of and or experience with new methods of design and construction, construction practices and the economics involved, as well as the application of industry codes and standards
• Demonstrated ability to articulate concepts through various oral and written communication media, using a diverse range of technical and business acumen
• Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking in complex problem solving, present options, and make recommendations
• Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel), and Adobe Acrobat

Project Engineer 4

• Minimum 12 years of experience as a senior technical advisor implementing, overseeing, and assessing engineering activities
• Demonstrated understanding of and experience working with Performance Based Indicators
• Experience in the development and implementation of a Project engineering program
• Demonstrated knowledge of industry, regulatory, and DOE/NNSA complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to Vital Safety Systems such as DOE 420.1C and DOE STD- 1189
• Minimum 12 years experience with all the following: non-reactor nuclear codes, standards, & best practice, nonreactor nuclear/hazardous mechanical confinement systems, and knowledge in generation of piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs)
• Demonstrate experience with development of safety class and safety significant designs

Education/Experience at Project Engineer 3

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

Education/Experience at Project Engineer 4

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 12 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
