Position: Hazardous Energy Control Subject Matter Expert (ESH Professional 3/4)

What You Will Do

As a Hazardous Energy Control (HEC) Subject Matter Expert (SME) supporting C and D shift operations, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient execution of 24/7 activities associated with the modernization of the TA-55 infrastructure and capabilities. You will serve as the primary on-shift resource for hazardous energy control issues, providing real‑time field support, issuing locks and tags, reviewing work‑control and electrical risk assessment documents, and ensuring worker access to qualified technical expertise during off‑shift operations.

Professional 3 Responsibilities
  • Oversee and evaluate program implementation to ensure consistent application of electrical safety and hazardous energy control requirements across all shifts and facilities.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve policies, procedures, forms, and tools that support safe and compliant work execution.
  • Analyze safety metrics, investigation results, and operational trends to identify emerging issues, implement proactive corrective measures, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Assess training methodologies, instructor qualifications, and program priorities to ensure alignment between field operations and institutional training needs.
  • Serve as a qualified instructor for LO/TO and electrical safety courses, providing high‑quality instruction for C and D shift personnel.
  • Partner with managers, facility operations personnel, and contractors to deliver effective safety solutions and ensure electrical safety and LO/TO needs are met across 24/7 operations.
  • Benchmark LANL programs against other DOE laboratories to incorporate best practices and maintain world‑class safety standards.
ESH Professional 4 Responsibilities
  • Lead the development of advanced concepts, procedures, and tools that set institutional direction for hazardous energy control and electrical safety.
  • Advising Laboratory management and external partners on high‑level technical and programmatic decisions with mission and compliance implications.
  • Represent LANL in DOE and national forums to benchmark and integrate best practices.
  • Mentoring peers and providing senior‑level instruction and evaluation in LO/TO and Electrical Safety Programs.
Shift Work

The position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager.

What You Need Minimum

Job Requirements
  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience identifying and controlling a wide range of hazardous energy sources and associated hazards across electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and other systems.
  • Proven ability to perform and review hazardous energy risk assessments, applying the hierarchy of controls to develop effective, field‑ready hazard mitigation strategies.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and standards related to hazardous energy control, including OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart S and , NFPA 70E, and related DOE requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing and improving LO/TO and electrical safety program implementation, including procedure development, field verification, and authorization processes.
  • Experience evaluating and resolving safety issues, conducting causal analyses, and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Advanced ability to interpret complex operational and technical conditions, perform problem‑solving and research, evaluate alternative solutions, and document and communicate recommendations effectively.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to convey complex electrical safety and hazardous energy control concepts to both technical and non‑technical personnel across all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated commitment to proactive safety leadership and field engagement, providing workers with immediate, expert‑level support to ensure safe and compliant operations during off‑shift and 24/7 activities.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance.
