Los Alamos National Laboratory invites applications for the Nuclear Facilities Electrical Engineer 3/4 position.
OverviewThe Engineering Services Division delivers innovative engineering solutions to support LANL’s scientific and national security mission. This role supports nuclear, accelerator, and non‑nuclear facilities across 38 square miles.
Responsibilities- Provide senior engineering expertise and mentor junior engineers
- Assess, maintain, and upgrade structural systems to support national security
- Represent the Engineering Services Division as a leader in project execution
- Ensure third‑party designs are code‑compliant and meet client needs
- Assess condition of existing facilities and infrastructure systems
- Apply engineering judgment to challenges
- Prepare accurate cost estimates and scope design projects
- Produce high‑level design deliverables including drawings, specifications, TIPs, SSIs, and calculations
- Adhere to LANL’s Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering
- Review construction submittals and provide RFI responses
- Support organizational initiatives for design and business practice improvements
- At Level 4:
Make visionary contributions to design and business practices; facilitate technical growth of the electrical design team; assist with work planning, staffing, and hiring
- Expert ability to support timely construction execution (submittals, RFIs, design changes, validation, as‑built documents)
- Effective workload management and communication
- Expert knowledge of engineering principles, codes, and standards (NEC, NFPA, IEEE, etc.)
- Experience in power system engineering (fault current analysis, voltage‑drop calculations, protection coordination, incident energy studies)
- Expert design experience in commercial and/or government sectors
- Experience developing engineering drawings, specifications, TIPs, SSIs
- Experience scoping complex projects and estimating engineering costs
- Ability to work in a dynamic multi‑discipline team
- Capability to mentor early‑career engineers
- At Level 4:
Proven leadership of a design team or organization; deep knowledge of DOE/NNSA codes and criteria; expertise in work planning, budgeting, and design coordination; contributions to organizational goals
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution (minimum 6 years practical experience for Level 3, 12 years for Level
4) - Advanced engineering or technical degree desired
- DOE Order 426.2 requires a BS degree, 2 years of related experience, and 1 year non‑reactor nuclear experience for technical support personnel
- Level 3:
Current Professional Engineering (PE) License in Electrical Engineering - Level 4:
Current NCEES Professional Engineering License (any U.S. state) - Design experience in nuclear, accelerator, or industrial facility operations
- Master's degree in engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution
- Experience with DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principles
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or Revit
- Knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards
Onsite in Los Alamos, New Mexico.
